I visited Brazil during the World Cup in 2014 and stayed here in an attempt to evade skyrocketing hotel prices. What a stroke of luck!

This camping hostel is popular with Brazilian tourists and although privately owned today, it was formerly the official residence of the US Ambassador following the migration of the Brazilian capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília in 1960. The current US Embassy is across the lake to the north in the diplomatic sector, while the current official residence of the US Ambassador is a few kilometres east and looks remarkably similar from above.

The pool and outdoor kitchen served as a lounge and meeting place for travelers of all stripes. My tent, behind the pool and to the right, sat near the edge of the lake. In the empty lot next door, a family of capybaras would frolic in the water during hot afternoons.

Despite racuous evenings with a Messi-worshipping Argentinian contingent, I felt more relaxed there than anywhere else on that trip.

Wow! This looks pretty incredible. Wasn't it hot in a tent?
