Arizona passes "common sense" ebike regulations similar to California's, simplifying, detailing, and expanding rules for ebike usage in Arizona.

I hope this means Tempe starts to get Jump Bike. They're another bike rental app, but they are ebikes.
Yay for more litterbikes!
I haven't read the article yet but I've been using a SoloWheel to and from home to bus stops to place of work. I wonder how much trouble people I've never made trouble with have made for me now.
Hmm, I don't see any changes for your class of vehicle. This shouldn't change anything about anything but the legal status of 2-3 wheeled devices with wheel sizes of at least 16" with electric motors and pedals. I'm not sure about the classification of your vehicle but whatever it was, it still is. I know it's not a bicycle because the basic definition of a bicycle in Ariozna, which didn't change, has a minimum wheel size
The Solowheel is just one wheel with two foot pedals. Small and discrete like carrying a briefcase into work.
That's why nothing changed, these laws don't apply to you. It was already given the right to be banned and then immediately banned by every major city individually over a decade ago. The only real thing these laws actually changed, besides making some obvious things more clear, is that 28mph ebikes are allowed now
Alright I think you're classified as a motorized skateboard. Unlike motorized and electric bicycles, your device is considered a motor vehicle. That's definitely bad, uh, you can be fined for impeding traffic and in Mesa you can't use the sidewalks. There's more implications of this, it's definitely not a legal status you want to have.
Edit: can't use it on sidewalks in Scottsdale either
Edit 2: banned COMPLETELY in Glendale
Edit 3: banned on sidewalks in Phoenix. I'm gonna say, that was not a good idea to buy.
Edit 4: I misread the city code, it's completely banned in Phoenix except on private property with prior authorization
Edit 5: let's go wild, it's banned in Tucson too
That's a real shame.
The SoloWheel's "top" speed is that of a casual jogger. But to save battery and ride safer, a moderate speed of travel is like a child skipping down the sidewalk.
This can't be on the sidewalk you say but it definitely doesn't belong on the street. Look at someone riding it on https://images.google.com and you'll understand why.
So basically this alternative to driving a gas powered automobile is now outlawed. And I was just looking at a poster in the break room asking people to cut back on pollution as much as possible. Thanks statists! Another job definitely not well done.
No man you're not listening, nothing changed here. It's banned through city ordinances, the right to ban it through city ordinances was given over a decade ago and most of these laws passed about at that time. It's totally not intentional: this was all caused by parents giving their kids noisy gasoline gopeds that annoyed the fuck out of everyone. Those aren't even a thing these days
But yeah nothing's changed, and uh frankly if it's not being enforced for quiet polite "skateboards" like yours I don't see it ever being enforced. Don't get a gasoline goped. It's also never gonna be made legal because ebikes only got these things through via lobbyists. Mini segways don't really have big lobbying groups.
It's still a problem of harrassment for everyone. Even if the intent of a law wasn't to target considerate commuters like myself using a whisper-quiet device like the Solowheel, the new law may still makes me susceptible to ticketing anytime a bully with a badge decides to try raising more revenue for the city.
Again, I haven't read the new laws yet but this is the concern I'm trying to express which some others here are calling pissing in my cereal.
Here's a fun one though: your wheel is 16". If you had two of them, you'd be... Not an ebike which requires pedals... But a "motorized bicycle". Get another wheel?
Its all a shame by the oil and auto industry
Link to phoenix ban? I thought you are good to go on street under 25mph?
http://www.codepublishing.com/AZ/Phoenix/html/Phoenix36/Phoenix3664.html
100% banned off private property
Motorized bicycles are 20mph too, and until August, going faster than 20mph down a hill is illegal. In August, it will still be illegal to go more than 20mph down a hill if your motor isn't electric
When I see the expression "common sense law" I know I'm listening to a liberal that wants to encroach on the freedoms and liberties of others.
Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?
Brah....it's 2018...steel cut oats or GTFO. You even lift?
Nah brah, overnight oats and chia seeds brah.
Well these are less restrictive and not vague and confusing like the old ones- the old ones also made riding a motorized bicycle down a hill faster than 20mph turn you into an illegal moped. They also described power exclusively as piston displacement, didn't explain where you can use them besides motorways, and had no options at all for going over 20mph
This new legislation; which goes into effect in August separates ebikes into three categories: class 1, 2, and 3.
Class 1 & 2 bikes may provide power up to 20mph while either being only pedal assist(class 1), or while having a throttle(class2). These bikes may use all bicycle and multi-use paths unless otherwise restricted.
Class 3 bikes may provide powered acceleration up to 28mph ONLY via pedal assist. These bikes may only use motorways and bicycle/multi-use paths adjacent to or in the proximity of motorways unless otherwise exempted.
However this legislation only provides rules for electric bikes, the old confusing laws still apply to petrol bicycles.
I was on a canal trail at night and some guy on a petro bike without a headlight comes motoring down the trail at 20+ mph. Wanted to call the cops on him.
That was illegal the whole time but I mean, good luck proving he was going over 20mph with the old legacy rules tho
