Jasmine
Fax machine buzz with an anemic rush
Months late and propelled by animal choice
As the bees stay close to the ground
And the tents stay rolled up
And the dirty dishes slide with the settling house
My blue lights are on
The room is screaming “Jasmine”
And we’re settling with the walls too
Out and in,
Grinding numbers for the furnace
Telling the pavement to rise
And breathing deep,
As tight as it’s been
As idle as ever
To rope up a Virgin Mary
Sitting on the slab
As expressive as she’ll ever be
And when reeled in close,
Only looking, only smells
No teeth for tearing meat
No hands for leverage
Only a room screaming “Jasmine”
And a solid breath in binary:
White as limestone marble
And running out like rain
There’s peace in the streets again
My bags are full of air,
The chairs are leaning on the tables
In coven hovels on the green
Waiting with me
