Ice Chewer

Feedback Received!

I took a few poetry classes in college for fun. In one class, we read a book of poetry titled “Matria” by Alexandra Regalado. The book touched on themes of gang violence, murder, and rape in El Salvador. Needless to say (or so I thought), these are some hard topics to confront, so when Alexandra Regalado came to speak to my class, I was all ears. That is, until, this girl sitting in front of me decided to reach down into her starbucks iced coffee, plop some ice into her mouth, and chew at what felt like a deafening volume. And, I know, I sound kind of crazy right now, but everyone was looking at her, trust me. Eventually I told her to shut it, but that’s not the point here. The point is the next week in class we were assigned with writing a “persona poem,” one written from someone else’s perspective other than your own. I took on that of the Ice Chewer in my poetry class and came up with this. I’ve since been working on a collection of poems called “Annoying Things I Hate.” I’d love your feedback on my first poem that kicked it all off! Thanks.

Ice Chewer

My long acrylic talons swim,
hunting for ice.
Swirling, water sloshes and frozen chips thrash
against thin, plastic walls.

Crunching and chomping, echoing,
over the impassioned vibrations of a poem,
burrowing deep into the tunnel
that is
your ear.

Clinking and crashing and smashing,
I don’t give a fuck,
isolated in my thick oblivion.
With every crunch and thundering pop,

I drive you all fucking mad.
