Staring at a wall
I’m staring at a wall
It’s two feet thick
It’s built of bricks
And iron rods
And wooden beams
But not all walls are what they seem
I’m staring at a wall
Or rather at a floral wall paper
Of gardenias
stamped like cookies on a baking tray
Evenly-spaced, floating,
as if grown in some alien garden
I’ve seen honey bees
Die in a vain
Trying to draw pollen from the printed paper
There are factories that produce plastic fruit
And They have walls
Wrapped in barbed wire
Their pollution offset by the people they hire
Their stock is impressive,
Their workers are tired
And If the people get angry
Their walls will get higher.
I’m staring at a wall
That’s not yet built
A wall proposed to keep us safe
A wall like any other
Except that it would cross across five states
With a couple tiny gates.
I’m not staring at a wall
I’m staring down a huge mistake
Let’s really think what it would take
Let’s try and think like we’re adults
Let’s not build our walls so high
That all we hear are the hurled insults
I see far too many walls
Opportunities are being shut
I’m not asking to build bridges
I just want the doors to open up
