Promposal Sonnet
Beside the cypress, Paris’ eyes befell
Three paragons of beauty to list out.
But Paris’ eyes had missed the fourth; my quail
To seek, though hide may she. While keen eyes scout For plumes auburn yet bright as gold, between
the forest branches. Twig to twig, she skips
about, and stare with sharp eyes to be seen,
as arrows pierce my feigned shield of courtship.
At last, I see my chance! This lot of mine
Has changed! I reel my bow to claim my prize
yet as away my quail flies; naught. I sigh...
Take her now, I might, but ne’er would her guise
To me substitute real attraction, Fie!
Tomorrow, I await her lullaby.
For AP Literature, our one extra credit assignment was to propose to our prom date a blazon sonnet. This is written to someone I had known for three years prior. We decided to get back together two days before I wrote her this. As a last note, Paris is the same Paris from the Helen of Troy story, which is significant.
