I think this is all a setup to kill Thrall as impactfully as possible

Blizzard traditionally has decent writing from a birds-eye outline level that falls apart in specific moments of execution. I think this is what the war of thorns is, and I think the chess pieces are in place to predict the next few moves. Sylvanas is indeed looking like Garrosh 2.0. So much so, that in the next patch or so, it will draw Thrall out of the woodwork to either help depose her or at least meet with other horde leaders to resolve the situation. In fact, it is one of the only scenarios where he would be willing to come back and would be a major character in the plot again. At that point, only after Kul Tirans are officially part of the alliance (so a full patch from now at least which is why the pacing feels so awkward now), Thrall will be murdered publicly by Jaina or a Kul Tiran NPC in retaliation to the WC3 stuff. That will reignite the war between factions even more, and the horde will have its own tree burning moment of outrage.

Sylvanas won't become the primary antagonist of the expansion. My guess is that she will be deposed as warchief but not race leader pretty early on, and will play a part in the old god story to come (possibly as a cheesy savior character by the end). This warmonger Sylvanas merely is a patch long rehash of the Garrosh story so it can then spin off in a different direction.

This honestly is one of the more believable speculations out there right now, I think.

Thrall hasn't been relevant for 2 years now.

I don't think anyone cares about him at this point in time.

Which is why he needs to have a real role in the plot before he gets killed. Give people time to remember that he's a good guy and a badass, then kill him for emotional effect.

But what sort of effect will that bring? Thrall was pretty much a neutral party after mop, I don't think the current horde will be too saddened by his passing. Especially considering he wasn't there for us when we needed him the most in Legion.

Frame his return as a reminder of what the new horde is supposed to stand for in contrast to Sylvanas. Frame him as the solution to the problem. Then kill him before the problem gets solved.

I don't know if that would make the player like him again or not, but if Thrall is going to die this expansion, it's a pretty effective way to do it.

That would be interesting to see, I agree.

But seeing how wow plot has developed so far - it seems too good to be true.

Don't you disrespect Green Jesus. In our wc3 hearts, he is still relevant. Also, good theory, I wouldn't even be mad if they write it like that.

Wc3 and early wow thrall was great. Cataclysm and mop Thrall was honestly very disappointing.

That's true as well. :(

Spoiler : The tree was getting slowly corrupted by the void who is lingering in Azeroth. She knows it, and youll also learn about it between 2nd and 3rd raid of BFA.

You're welcome.

Is this speculation or is there info out there about this? I don't care at all about spoilers, so wouldn't mind seeing the info on this.

It's one of the theories that was going around to justify her doing it months ago. Thing is, the world trees planted by Fandral were always corrupted and the Elves knew it, destroying several themselves. Teldrassil was not even close to the corruption they had.
