Going to look at '13 VX tomorrow. low hours, what to look for?
I never had a waverunner before,
What should I check? compression = ??? from under the ski what do I look at? can I see the pump/blades?
how to check cooling system from overheating? will it overheat on a hose? do I need to water test it?

A ride test is absolutely the best way to check out any PWC. It will uncover 95% of anything that is wrong. If can check compression then do so -- try and do it cold if possible.
Checking the impeller blades is best done with the PWC on a trailer and best inspected from the front (the side the water goes into), but if you can only see the rear of it then check that.
Run it on the hose only if necessary (no ride test). It's far too easy to hydrolock the engine if done improperly. The water should always be off if the engine is not running. It is OK to run the engine without cooling water for up to 15 seconds.
Here are good tips on buying a used one: http://www.groupk.com/pwc-buying.htm Definitely follow the link for the checklist.
Thanks very much.
sorry to say, he sold it last night... 4500 w/ trl.
I'll keep looking.... :(
It sounds like you missed out on a good deal. $4500 with trailer for any newer PWC like that with low hours is a very good price unless it's beat to heck. I wouldn't be surprised if it sold very quickly.
