That’s not enough time to go home,

quench frayed ends with coconut conditioner

and drive to Surrey. That’s an hour listening to

Niall Horan rather than your whirring fans.

It’s seven pm; you work at eight am.

I count hours on my fingers that

plunge in your hair, and wish that I could

steal something. Seconds from your locks,

or stress from the grays— maybe

traces of memory’s kisses and virginity.

Night is like a toddler that crawls on the floor,

pretending to be a wolf pretending to be a sheep.

It nips at our heels, and forces us onto your bed.

We face two fans; the air conditioner hums in

the background as the toddler peers over the bedside

with its polar, pudgy fingers. I get cold in my underwear.

The top of your foot touches my calf;

your arms pull me in as if I were your knees.

You drop like a cannon into rest’s wave while

the ticking in your head whispers like a succubus,

“Sleep,” and oh, how deadly her tongue is.
