Why is the performance of Google Maps so garbage?

Every time I use Google Maps there is at least one instance where the map just freezes and I can't navigate. Not only that but everything else on my device seems to slow down when the mini floater is active. This is even worse when a messenger chat head is floating along with it. This was also the case on my previous Galaxy S6. I don't understand why this application performs so poorly on flagship hardware. Is there any way to fix this?

Think it's just you, dude. It's been fine on mine.

I'm good as well. P2 XL.

Don't know how widespread the problem is but I get the exact same symptoms on my 2xl running P. So at the very least there's two of us...

maybe it's a bug with whatever is doing the floating head thing? I use maps daily and I don't think it has ever crashed. I don't really multitask when using maps, just swap to Music to hit play so dunno about that.

Why are you assuming everyone is experiencing the same performance?

The title is asking why it's so, as if it's 'garbage' for all.

My Pixel 2 has become pretty laggy at moments on Android P (even after a fresh install). Sort of disappointing.. hoping it will get better.

My battery life has sucked since the upgrade. I didn't do a full wipe but I shouldn't have to. It's significant enough to be pretty annoying.

I'm getting about 1 hour less of SOT on Pie, but I was background restricting all apps before while I leave all defaults now. I'm just experimenting with adaptive battery to see if its good enough to figure things out on its own.

I did a fresh install and the battery sucked for the first 4 days. After that I'm assuming adaptive battery learned more about me because since then my battery life has been really good.

I've noticed frames dropping in Maps on my 2 XL since the upgrade to P as well. Just a little more stutter overall. Hopefully an update will fix.

My maps works fine on my 2XL.

I run into this a lot too and it's super frustrating sometimes. It can literally just freeze for probably like 2 - 5+ seconds.

I have so many problems with Maps as well. It must only be an issue with some phones because its absolutely unusable for me. It won't update when I'm moving compass doesn't update so it thinks I'm going in a different direction, etc.

I was late to my first day at a job teaching a robotics class at a middle school because it didn't update and I couldn't tell which offramp to take and it took me 20 min to get back on track.

After this incident I actually considered dumping the phone all together due to the fact that I can't rely on the maps app. I wish I could completely uninstall it from my phone.

Have a Pixel 2 that is always updated. This happens to me consistently in Seattle and Sacramento.

I think it's just resource intensive

I get the exact same thing on my 2xl. Haven't decided if it's a maps app thing or the 2xl lag you're reading a lot about now. Clearing app data doesn't help, but i haven't tried a factory restore yet...

Are you perhaps charging the device while using the navigation? I noticed that my phone screws up a lot with the GPS when it's plugged in, but when it's not, it works fine.

Hmmm weird. Mine works fine. The only buggy thing about Google maps is the walking navigation. It can never pinpoint my walking location. Makes me walk in loops and almost made me miss my interview!

(OG pixel) I've never had mine freeze but one weird thing that it liked to do while i was on vacation was say " take the second right on to Taylor Street" ....there is no second right.. did that a few times.

Yeah google map on Android has much less frame rate compare to iOS version. Especially during navigation

I'm using pixel XL 2 and compred with iOS. iOS version of Google maps is much smoother especially during navigation. Even Google app is smoother on iOS, especially in the image searching view , the transition animation ehe taping a picture much smoother on iOS , and pixel it stutters

I've had a lot more issues lately as well on my Pixel2. It will just freeze and hang or constantly change routes on me for no reason. Kind of a PITA.
