New player Tau list. Feedback requested.

I've been picking up used models to make Kill Teams out of for the factions I've never tired before. I only have a single Stealth Suit, 5 pathfinders, and 3 fire warriors (Up to two more if I cast extra torsos out of greenstuff) and some sprues with left over bits. No drones. For my below list I have to cast one fire warrior torso.

What do you think? I have enough bits to change out the weaponry. If there's a drone I absolutely need, I suppose I could buy one off a bits site or something.

If you're going for max efficiency two stealth suits worked best for me. Add in gun drone protecting your suits, 3 pathfinders gunners - two rail rifles and ion rifle along with their bodyguard, recon drone. Top it off with two regular pathfinders for capturing objectives.

Why two PF instead of Gun Drones to take objectives? Don’t have the 2 points? Seems like the gun drone is better in every way.

Yeah it maxes at 100 pts and i actually checked once again that you have to drop one gun drone so the list is:

2x Stealth Suit

2x Pathfinder Rail rfile

1x Pathfinder Ion Rifle

1x Recon Drone

1x Gun Drone

2x Pathfinder

9 bodies, 100 pts. You could drop rail rifle for 2nd ion rifle to upgrade pathfinders to drones but i don't think it's worth it.

I’ve run something similar in the past with -2PF +1 gun drone and upgrade to rail rifle and give the leader target lock comes out at 98 points 8 models. Had a lot of success. I generally prefer the rail rifle over the ion rifle. Also 9 models and 8 models both take break tests after 5 models have flesh wounds or are out of action so you’re actually easier to break at 9 (more targets, same break point) so tend to prefer even lists.

Have you found much value in the 2 plain pathfinders? Do you ever shoot their markerlights? I’ve played a handful of variants of tau lists but usually don’t take plain PF if I can avoid it.

Your list sounds very reasonable, have to give it a try. Nah, never used markerlights but i used those two guys to seize objectives.

From what I read I heard that the stealth suits are boss as is gun drones. Now the way I understand it is that your stealth suits have key word fly and can be used to address charges and melee units. In that case a leader in that role may die and you lose cp from this. I'm still not play testing my units until next week but will try a Firewarrior or Breacher with DS8 turret as leader and two stealths up front to rattle the enemy. I'll get back to you how it turns out.

You can fallback and shoot the next shooting phase if you have the fly keyword.

Yeah, at work atm so I couldn't remember why but that's why me stealthy bois be headed up into battle :)

Only a basic fire warrior or breacher tan take the turret and they arent allowed to be the leader.

Yeah when I got done work I was disappoint. Anyway I'll figure something out and probably drop the idea of turret drone.

With limited models, it's what you've got. For the hit penalties alone though, I'd recommend pulse rifles over blasters if you can. Two shots at 15 inches without the -1 penalty for over 1/2 range.

For flavour, I think the breachers are great! For effectiveness, I'd recommend swapping them to fire warriors with pulse rifles. That does depend on how dense your terrain usually is, and how you like to play, of course!

Find a way to take a recon drone for your pathfinders.

Leader and specialist look great.

  1. Where’s your recon drone? Don’t leave home without it. It’s a force multiplier on your pathfinder gunners AND can absorb wounds.
  2. Ditch the plain pathfinders. You won’t want to shoot the markerlights and you’d be better off with gun drones or stealth suits.
  3. Either ditch all the FW or take one plain with a DS8. Replace the others with more gun drones and/or stealth suits.

That’s what I’ve had the most success with playing tau. Just my 2cents tho. Honestly tip #1 you should certainly do and 2-3 will make your list stronger but aren’t as important as 1.

Edit: didn’t see that you don’t have more models. At least ditch the blasters and take pulse rifles. The half range penalty really messes with the blasters. If you can get a recon drone it’s absolutely worth it.
