Sit Pretty.
I'm just a curio cabinet
Set inside your living room
Full of oddities you can't explain
But I'm beautiful
Adorned in gold trim
Cut from cherry wood
Wrapped in crown molding
And you look upon me
Surrounded by your friends
And say "ain't she the best?"
And I'm not speaking
Holding my tongue
My drawers locked tight
As you say "she's so gorgeous"
Encased in windexed glass
My heart weeps
Because I'm just an antique
Something you hold onto
Because it's comfortable
Because it's unique
Because I'm pretty
A trophy you hold on your arm
Showcase in your home
As your friends ooh and ahh
Around my limbs
I wonder then what I am
Am I only this?
Just this and nothing else?
And I wonder what I replaced
There's an imprint on the floor
Larger than what my slim legs can hold
And you stare sometimes at my feet
Wishing that imprint sprouted up
Wishing and waiting for that imprint to take its rightful place
As I linger and watch behind the transparent doors of my case
You begin to be less careful
You don't polish anymore
You don't wipe my glass clean
You slam my doors shut
And forget to lock with a key
You don't dust my curiosities
My souvenirs remain untouched
Then something happens
You bring a new cabinet through the door
Fresh and polished just today
Her black wooden doors hold gold handles
Her legs, though slim, hold all that weight
You and all your friends pick me up
Push me on my side, and haul me passed the door
Was I only new to you?
Was I damaged, a chip in the molding?
Was there an etch in my glass?
Did your friends sneer towards my cage?
And cut words in my casing?
Was I just too much?
A prize too used?
I stand on the corner of your driveway
Waiting for a truck that may never pass by
And the rain pours on me, ruining my polish
Warping my tender flesh
Someone passes, and stops
Sees something worth protecting
Valued in priceless treasures in their eye
And I wonder then
As they re-trim my doors
Placing new glass in my frame
What is the rate at which I am sold?
Auctioned off to new buyers?
And they hush my worries
And whisper you're cherished, beyond price and compare
