Need help with AKG k7XX.

Help Request

Trying to repair my k7xxs and I am wondering what kind of wire they use inside the headphones. The wire I have is thicker and I'm new at repairing stuff like this.

Also, I currently use these with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. Should that be enough to power these or should I invest in an amp/dac?

What are you looking at here? I have repaired a few pairs now sadly and re-soldered the wires under the covers.

edit: For short lengths I don't think there will be an issue.

It's just the red and white cable for the right ear cup. The red wire broke and I need to replace it. But it's really thin and I just wanna make sure I use the right wire.

Edit: To clarify, I cant reuse the original wire. It needs to be replaced. At the moment I tried soldering it with the wire that came with my soldering kit but I could tell that the right side was slightly louder, so I de-soldered it and and came here for advice.

just replace it, use copper cables, ideally replace cables on both sides with same kind of wire to make it perfect. if you replace only one side its still ok

I don't know much about audio equipment beyond headphones and a little bit about amps and dacs but the k7xx has a 62 ohm impedance so check if the scarlett can power that

Forgive my ignorance. But how would equipement normally say that? Something like "62 ohm impedance or below"

Ignore him. Impedance is only a small part of the equation. Sensitivity is a much larger one. Main reason to look at impedance is to look at the amplifier's output impedance and make sure the amplifier's output impedance is ~1/8th or less of the headphone's impedance.

What you want to pay attention to in order to see if an amplifier will drive a headphone is the output power. The K7XX is rated at 105dB/V. So for 1 V RMS output of power from an amplifier, it'll get to 105dBSPL. For a 62-ohm headpohne, this is slightly on the lower side, so it might be a little quieter than another similar impedance headphone.

Scarlet Solo rates it's max output at around +10dBu, which if my math is accurate, translates to about 2.45 V RMS output of power. Which if we calculate in the 105dB/V sensitivity, puts it around 112dBSPL output possible from the headphones. Which meets the arbitrary 110dBSPL mark that most people generally aim for to be able handle transient peaks and stuff well in quieter music.

The only issue is the Output Impedance at around 10-ohms is slightly high. 1/6th isn't a horrible ratio to avoid being affected that much, and the K7XX's impedance curve isn't too crazy wild. It'll likely only add a little bit of warmth, and possibly some upper treble.

Hey, thank you for the very detailed info! I appreciate it. I've also found a thread to help with the sound quality by using equalizer apo. Looks like some one came up with a good profile for the k7xxs.

Just look hp the product and type impedance
