Talk me out of a Pixel 2 XL

car

Hey all,

I’m looking to upgrade from my iPhone 6s+. I feel like the Pixel 2 XL is what I want, but I just want to make sure I’m not missing something.

Storage size/expandable memory doesn’t matter. Pixel 2 has unlimited photo storage. I don’t have a massive music library and I use Spotify or Pandora most of the time.

Headphone jack doesn’t matter either. I’ve got Bluetooth in my car and a portable speaker for the kitchen/pool/grill.

I do need a phone that’s fairly up to date as far as os is concerned. I’m constantly testing mobile products as part of my job, and that’s part of the reason I’m upgrading. My old Android phone is pretty much sunset on most of the products I need to use it to test on and it doesn’t have a fingerprint reader.

I do absolutely need a thumbprint/fingerprint reader to test product functionality.

Other than that, I’d like to have a decent camera that’s at least on par with my current device. It’ll replace my iPhone 6s+ on day to day usage, but I’ll have to keep it as a backup and to continue to test products on.

I think that covers pretty much everything.

I think the best reason not to get a Pixel 2 XL is because the Pixel 3's will be coming out soon. It might be beneficial for you to wait to see how those are before you get the Pixel 2.

although... you could wait for the P2XL price to drop when the P3XL comes out. Not a fan of the notch.

Or get the Pixel 3 without the notch!

Exactly. Be patient, and the Pixel 2 is going to get waaayyy cheaper. Let the suckers pay for the development of fancy new phones, and then pick it up a year later at half price once all the bugs are worked out.

If you buy it, I will track you down and fight you. Just let that sink in. Let it wash over you like a cool breeze.

I have one regret, and it’s that I can’t upvote you more than once.

Hey Predator6! If you're switching from an iPhone to Android, make sure to turn off iMessage to make sure you still get texts from iPhone users. See here for more information. I'm replying because I heard you say one of the 34 phrases I listen for in the body of your post.

Its >$1000

There are LOTS of amazing phones out there for <$600

You don't need the gimmicks of the flagship phones

It's much less

In lieu of a Pixel, what would you recommend?

Pixel 2, non XL

The screen on it is unacceptable even on a phone half its price and LG quality control is immensely lacking; just look at the myriad issues it had at launch. If getting fast updates is important, get the smaller Pixel 2 or wait for the Pixel 3

It’s not as important to have updates the day they launch, but at a decent rate and having a long lifespan as far as OS updates would be important.

I'd wait for the pixel 3 non compliance and see how it is. I'm on a 2xl right now and the screen is just awful for a phone that costs this much. It didn't big me at first but the longer I've had it the more it eats at me seeing how much nicer the Samsung screens are

When it comes to updates, the devices that get updates the fastest (if at all) are those that are built by the company who makes the software - namely Apple and Google. Everything else needs to be adapted to the manufacturers hardware, and that takes time/money.

Buying the Pixel 2 right now seems silly... it's going to drop by ~$300 shortly after the 3 comes out. For me, there is three options: buy the Pixel XL right now, buy the Pixel 3 XL in October, or buy the Pixel 2 XL in November.

The only thing that would tempt me is if I did more graphical work, and could put the Samsung Note to good use (damn that stylus is amazing).

I just bought the Essential phone after using an iPhone 6 and other Apple products for a long time and I've been really liking it. I'm not really too knowledgeable when it comes to Android but from what I've heard, the Essential seems to be a good alternative to a Pixel. The only downside for me so far has the quality of photos when using the camera at night (gets kinda grainy) but other than that I've been loving the battery life, fingerprint reader on the back and the amount of storage the phone has. I've felt like it's been a great replacement for my iPhone 6 and I think the camera is pretty decent and I wouldn't know how to compare it to my iPhone camera, since I never felt like my iPhone's camera was particularly amazing either lol.

Essential Phone, I've heard a lot of good things about it. Sucks now that the price jumped up.

The iPhone cameras in terms of hardware aren't that amazing, but what makes up their camera flaws are their camera software. A photo combined with a phones megapixel spec and the manufacturer camera software can turn flawless.

Look into Gcam(Google's camera software) and why people root their phones for their camera.
