Yeah it isn't exactly the highest bar.

Is it really a surprise? Macbooks have for years been very poor proper workstations due to the focus on making a quiet and thin machine meaning their performance/thermals are utter shit under load.

36
PirateMudX230•

Yeah. People perceive fan noise as the sign of a low quality product.

18
orions_nippleT450s•

On my work laptop the first thing I installed was the fan controller that everyone who actually cares about performance on Macs uses. The thermals have been fine since and I wear headphones at work anyway.

Granted you shouldn't have to install third party software to keep you comp cool the way it should, but there are plenty of people out there who fine tune their machine's fans to within hundreds of rpms.

Shitting on mac thermals is basically a trope at this point and $20 says if these reviewers actually installed the fan controller the thermals would be pretty damn close to any other computer. Adding better thermal paste than stock would also help and isn't hard to do. Even better thermals are achieved via a $30 usb fan pad.

There's plenty of reasons to shit on Macs and I would never buy one with my own money, but the thermal discussion at this point is so tired and easily fixable that it's annoying.

quickscoperdogeX230•

I disagree. If you need to void your warranty go get decent temps your computers cooling solution is obviously broken.

13
orions_nippleT450s•

Two out of the three fixes I listed don't void your warranty according to apple. Even putting in thermal paste doesn't void your warranty, legally.

-2
PirateMudX230•

Yes, I was just discussing the reason for Apple setting strange fan curves. I had a chat with someone a few months back, who was complaining that HP wasn't giving them a replacement laptop. Their complaints were that the HDD had failed (so... get the HDD replaced) and that the fan was loud (it would have been loud from day 1, or, clean the heatsinks). They weren't techy people at all, the laptop was just a mysterious tool for them and it made a noise. The BS that "silence = quality*" is so ingrained it's unreal.

  • Silence can = quality, obviously, but when you're trying to dissipate watts through a tiny heatsink you're stuck with high speed air (loud) or high temps (quiet, only a "problem" a few years from now).
4
orions_nippleT450s•

And you just touched on the point why I don't really think all the blame of the thermal issue lands on Apple, they're responding to customer trends who think thin+light+silent = amazing. Even Linus 24/7 bitches about any fan noise of any sort that is in reality quieter than the air condition running in your house.

The technical complaints about Apple's design is endless, but the experience complaints are louder because the kind of people who'll complain about the experience of loud fans are much greater in number. Apple's core business isn't pro pr even prosumer anymore and therefore the portion of their customers who actually care about technical issues is small, why should Apple cater to them? And the enterprise market that does by their hardware can just go out and buy another if the laptop fails to prevent user downtime.

5
zdy132•

"Easily fixable" or not, it's apple's choice to not ramp up the fan.

It's like saying people are annoying to complain about intel's toothpaste between lid and the die, because delidding the cpu is quite an easy fix.

3
orions_nippleT450s•

And it's your choice to install third party software (taking all of 30 seconds) that can ramp up the fan. Something that is significantly easier to do than delidding.

Except that past MacBook Pros have been surprisingly noisy, much noisier than ThinkPads 😂

Their thinness, poor ventilation and anaemic fans make them noisier than one would expect.

8
poopyheadthrowawayT60p•

At least in Geekbench, Macs have consistently outperformed their competitors (comparing SKUs with the same CPUs). People often mistake this for some magic optimization^TM from Apple, but in reality it's simply because Apple removes the power limits and lets their Macs turbo as much as they want (until they thermal throttle, but I've found that at least in ultrabooks, they power throttle before they thermal throttle most of the time). But this time, Apple flew too close to the sun and got burned.

4
stringParameterT480S•

MacBook Pro owners don't care about performance though - honestly, when I was on the MacOS platform, not once did I compare the specs to other manufacturers. I may have been using shit, but I was happy to pay for it because I didn't know any better. Apple could have fitted an Intel i3, called it a "custom CPU" and I would have bought it, hook line and sinker.

20
zhenya00•

That's pretty much a load of crap catering to the fan base here. 'Most PC owners don't care about performance' is an equally true statement. What most people actually care about is whether their computer is an impediment to their workflow or a transparent tool. I'm a big Thinkpad fan, love my X1C5, but the reality is that my Macbook is much more transparent to my workflow than my Thinkpad - largely because of the OS and the integration with the hardware. My 2015 12" Macbook handles the same workload I put on my X1C with half the RAM and no fan and a processor that is demonstrably slower. It's the overall integration that matters.

14
LukeFLW700 X40 X1 Carbon (Original)•

You can get PC mobile workstations though, and power users are well catered to by Lenovo.

This is not true with Apple. The MacBook Pro has had weak non workstation GPUs for 10 years. It’s current RAM limit is bad.

What you’re talking about is really the OS, and I would generally agree about the pleasantness of the Mac user experience. But if you’re a power user, doing computer vision or having three IDEs open or doing 3D rendering, after a while integration doesn’t cut it. You need more than that.

6
zhenya00•

The Macbook Pro 15 has been a lot closer to a mobile workstation than a mass market laptop for years. 45w CPU's, Quadro graphics cards. In a device that weighed about 4lbs.

1†
LukeFLW700 X40 X1 Carbon (Original)•

You’re wrong - many mass market laptops, albeit the higher end ones, had 45W CPUs. That’s not a great claim to fame.

No workstation GPU + low/soldered RAM + storage limitations = not a workstation.

6
LukeFLW700 X40 X1 Carbon (Original)•

or just use linux..

1
FlippngProgrammerT440p•

it's just not the same. MacOS is all about the ecosystem. Once you start using linux quite heavily the more disconnect from the macos aspect. They are both very different from each other. Linux is way more modular than any operating system out there and you can read on more about that online. Some distros you use terminal for everything. Configuring lockscreen, changing wallpapers, fingerprint sensors, writing scripts. Unlike macOS where everything is "drag this download to the Application folder" etc. I had the misconception that they were similar when I moved from macos to linux about 1.5 years ago but over time I've realized how different things are between the both of them. MacOS (ecosystem, social status), Linux (you''re in control, freedom).

9
scalatronn•

I use both (Mac at work and Linux at home) and I can say if you use 'normal' distro everything works ootb and you don't need to configure anything. Now with flatpak and software center in gnome it's becoming even easier and more accessible. But I agree that osx is a social status. Me personally I'd choose thinkpads with fedora anytime over macs but that's probably the matter of preference

4
tarckX230 T480s•

yeah, right.. ootb. x230, lazy day at work, decided to install manjaro as dual boot. Ok, looks good. Came home, docked my computer and voila.. could not manage to output correctly in both of external monitors. Video options (or how its called in that os) was not accessible ( window disappears right after popping up). I remember 10 years ago, when canonical sent cd's of ubuntu. Guy said, it works ootb. Those where lies. And now I saw all those comments about how great linux is now and decided to try, 10 years later same shit. Same lies. I could spend my precious time in google searching any new issue I stumble upon but why do so when I have side OS that does not has any of it? I will try is it ootb after 10 more years, than maybe my opinion will change.

All the cores in all Intel CPUs are the same architecture, across Xeon E3/E5 and Core i5/i7 (even i3 iirc) for a given generation. [note: "Core" with a capital C to designate the intel product, "core" lowercase c for the concept of a CPU unit.]

Historically (until Zen forced them to do better), there is a clear equivalence between pro Xeons E3/E5 and consumer i5/i7:

  • Xeon E3 = Core i7 (4C/8T) [and Core i5 is just a non-hyperthreaded i7], which used to be capped at 4 physical cores (hyperthreaded thus 8 logical cores).
  • Xeon E5-1xxx = "HEDT" (High-End Desktop, consumer line, which for Intel meant i7 with 6 cores and above) [the x79, x99 etc. chipset line, which is on par with C600 etc. series for Xeons].
  • Xeon E5-2xxx = no consumer equivalent (dual socket E5)

Generally on Xeons, you'll have more RAM support, with ECC; less iGPU variants; locked multiplier (no overclocking); more PCIe lanes (40); generally good thermals.

i9 is just a recent marketing name for i7's with more cores than they used to have, perhaps they finally called Xeon E5 equivalent "i9" instead of "HEDT i7", that would make sense (E3 = i7, E5 = i9), but I haven't checked if it's exactly this.

On laptop CPU's it's a bit more blurry because historically i5 and i7 were the same, just i7 clocked higher on 15W. Now they're hyperthreaded, both. I suppose the i9 is just a higher-version of the same chip. All that matters is that you can give it the cooling it needs, otherwise it's obvious it will perform comparably to the i7 or even i5 if they can all only sustain the same clocks due to external conditions.

7
AltForFriendPCT420•

Don't forget the i7 X series CPUs! Those were replaced by i9s, but they're practically the same thing. The desktop chips were i7s with more cores on a different CPU socket too.

Ha! more subtleties... I've been out of this game since 2016 (when I build my current workstation). I had given up on following these brands naming schemes, haha.

But it really helps when you're buying/building stuff. I did know pretty much everything about their E5 line back then... This let me cherry-pick two 2687W (Sandy Bridge 2012) for $550 (eBay) in summer 2016. Fast forward 2018 and multi-core performance is still on par with Threadripper 16C/32T! Knowledge FTW, hehe.
