The House Needs Work
There’s nothing quite like
the serenity of a jack hammer
ripping through a
Sunday morning
the day after night shift.
Except for perhaps
your constant nagging voice
shitting all over us.
I get it.
You’re not happy.
Nothing worked out
the way you’d planned.
You’ve got your pretty little dresses
sitting on hangers
collecting dust.
I got home at six forty nine today.
Snuck in while you were still
deep in some much needed
“beauty sleep”.
Silently I glided in
like the ghost of my former self.
Careful not to wake
The Beast.
Well, rest easy my love.
Don’t you worry.
Don’t you worry about the house.
The car.
The gas.
Your pretty little clothes.
The Reno’s needed to fix the front patio
that you insisted needed to be
completed this weekend.
Don’t you worry.
I’ll get it done.
And while your
mouth is relentlessly moving.
Out of sync and
out of touch.
Just remember.
You’re stuck with me
as much as I’m stuck with you.
Two star crossed lovers
on James street.
And just as the
jack hammer chips away
that big old solid concrete slab
that once kept our initials
and promises of forever.
Slowly but surely
your constant nagging voice
will leave nothing
but serenity
silence
and a ghost.
