Hair is kind of a mess. Need advice.

I've had short hair most of my life. I am growing it out. It's at shoulder length now.

I went to my hairdresser and he told me since I have fine, thin hair (and thinning) I should try Nioxin. My hair is also naturally slightly oily according to him.

Six months later, my hair is at a length where I can see problems more easily. It's frizzy all the time. If I go one day without shampooing, it gets extremely oily. It's very wavy, so I use a heat brush daily with some heat protectant to make myself presentable.

Any advice?

My advice is a routine you can do to improve the structure of your hair:

  1. use microfiber towel after shower. Microfiber is way better than regular towel. It soak all the water from hair without weighted it down .

  2. your shampoo is good . I am addicted to Maui shampoo. It is drug store and the shampoo is sulfate free. The conditioner is silicone free. The combination is good and will hopefully cleanse your hair from buildup oil you might have.

  3. use oil on ends of and only if you feel you have dry ends or you want to protect the ends from being super dry. Here is more of tips in this link : tips for good hair

  4. I swear by hair treatment : coconut and castor oil. They hopefully strengthen your hair from roots to ends and leaving it shiny, healthy looking. Nots: you need to cleanse your hair with sulfate free well to get rid of the oil treatment. Here is how to use it in here: castor and coconut oil treatment

Does your shampoo have sulfates? They can cause your scalp to get oily quick after washes, because they're over-stripping and drying out your scalp. It produces more oil to balance this, and then you wash more to remove all the oil, it can be an endless cycle.

Sulfate free shampoos help with this, although there's usually a period where your scalp keeps making a ton of oil because it hasn't realized you're not stripping it all away. You can deal with this by alternating new shampoo and old every other wash, then do two washes with sulfate-free, one wash with old shampoo, etc.

The heat brush is not good for your hair. Everyone's hair tolerates heat differently, so it's hard to say how much of your frizz is due to heat styling, but I definitely advise deep conditioning at least once a week for at least half an hour. Easiest way to do that is to wash hair, work in conditioner, put it up with a clip, put a shower cap (or plastic grocery bag) over it, then tie an old t-shirt around it to help hold in heat. Then go do housework for a bit, come back, and finish showering as normal.

If that's too much, at least try letting a good conditioner sit for 5 minutes in the shower while you do other stuff.

As mentioned, r/curlyhair can be helpful for wavy hair, too. I actually thought my hair was wavy, tried the CG method, and oh, I have curly hair?! CG is also great for minimizing frizz. And it can make it less of a battle to simply feel presentable.

And if you're hair is very wavy, take a look at r/curlyhair. They have advice for wavy people too! It might help with the frizz and oiliness.

I would grab a copy of the Curly Girl Handbook, it's for wavies too. Pretty cheap to get a used copy. The method does involve not brushing, which should reduce the amount of hair loss. I'd also recommend grabbing a decent dry shampoo or making your own- I make my own since it's alcohol free and cheap. For shampoo I'd recommend something very gentle(Jessicurl has a good one) and/or a Ketoconazole-containing one. The new Johnson's baby shampoo formulation is sulfate-free but I haven't tried it.

For thinning hair you're probably going to get better results for cheaper with Rogaine http://science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2017/02/scientifically-tested-over-counter.html

Are you still trimming your hair? Be sure to keep trimming it, even though you’re growing it out. I suggest not using conditioners with paranormal in them since your hair is oily. Try to use heat less. It will take a lot of time to grow out and trim the damaged hair off little by little, but keep taking good care of your hair and eventually all the new growth will be healthier.

Diva curl products are great for curly hair. It is a little bit to get used to but they work great. Also look up using an old T-shirt to dry your hair with your curls supported. Can be a beautiful result. Also known as plop curls

I always say this but it’s because it has helped me so much! Have you tried a scalp scaler? Or an acid shampoo? I use la roche posay kerium shampoo and the scaler I got it at the Korean market, it’s an scalp exfoliator, it has helped me unclog the pores in my scalp, making my hair shinier and I can feel that it produces less oil. I use also L’Oréal clay mask for my scalp
