How Terrible
How terrible, infinity:
there where nothing lasts
and nothing changes,
where any size you care to be is zero…
How much more human to worship laughter.
How much saner to paint the void with our habits.
I wake up one day
in Los Angeles
to the sound of her breathing, asleep.
Her features soft and peaceful like a child’s.
The morning light shines on the crumpled covers
on a bed made to scale for us.
I take a moment to remember my name and my past
and I don’t wake her.
I arrived yesterday morning
by train. Exited the boarding tunnels
and walked through the mid-century station
with its high vaulted ceiling and rows
of leather chairs with wooden armrests,
pigeons wandering the isles, looking for food crumbs.
Outside, I set my bag down and waited.
She had dyed her hair pink.
It’d been blond too long, she said (3 weeks)
and I thought, “How beautiful to measure time like this!”
as I jumped into her car and agreed we needed coffee
and we sped into the day.
