Peaches II
June is long over, and with it the fruits
That I loved and devoured
Without thought.
Yes,
We had worshipped the summer.
How the sun seemed to spring joyful, alive,
From down under the mountains
And hang dazed in the pale sky
as if stunned.
We were stunned.
Such an abundance of peaches
That they seemed sure to rot long before me
And my hungry mouth could try
To finish.
Strange
How autumn makes itself known
And prepares its own grave, welcome us in,
A different way to love us.
New fruits that know of winter,
know the dark,
And I think
That summer might never come
Back to me, not now that I know what will come
After it and how the fruit
In fact ends.
Now,
Perhaps it is better to
Instead think of winter and make stores of
Less sweet fruit, that might yet give
The sun still inside of them up
To my mouth.
But I think
I still think of the peaches.
