The Tower of Elen, Chapter One [Fantasy/SciFi] (the scifi elements are not really in this chapter, however)

The (edited) first draft of the first chapter of a potential series of novels. Any and all critique is welcome. I'm particularly concerned with pacing, plot, dialogue, and characters. Are you intrigued by the world and its characters, or are they somewhat flat and uninteresting? I also wonder if this chapter should be split into two. And the time skips, are they jarring? Do you want more in-depth description, or is there enough?
