What games are realistic about the capabilities of one man instead of letting the player be a one man army?
Most games want the player to play out a power fantasy of mowing down dozens of enemies with ease. But sometimes it makes you wonder; how much could one man realistically do? With enough training quite a bit, but what is commonly seen in video games is just too much. Battlefield and CoD games, alongside with most other games, see you blasting through many companies worth of enemies without a scratch. Suppressive fire is not a thing to video game character. Or retreating. Only way forward in a normal shooter is forward. And only by killing everyone that stands in your way.
But I think there is beauty in a more grounded portrayal of a common soldier. They rarely kill all of the enemies. They advance through the enemy fire and still take the objective. They suppress the enemy while allies retreat. They survive. Maybe what I'm thinking about is not a military shooter game at all but something closer to a survival game. Where your life is too valuable to rush in and try to beat a squad of enemies all by yourself.
So, what games, shooters or otherwive, do you think portray the common man and his abilities a bit more realistically than most games. He's not a superhuman, he's simply a man fighting to best of his abilities.
