Hopefully the people responsible for this get sentenced. This is onvrijwillige doodslag. That might put an end to these needless folteringen gone bad we hear about every year.
Sadly enough, the kind of people still doing "doops" like this today, won't be that much hindered by this event in the future.
Exactly. This will probably lead to even more prohibition in already regulated initiations that follow rules agreed upon by the police and the students while the actual problem, the unaffiliated Studentenclubs, will remain untouched.

onvrijwillige doodslag > involuntary manslaughter
" an unintentional killing that results from recklessness or criminal negligence, or from an unlawful act that is a misdemeanor or low-level felony "
Oh and foltering > torture
[deleted]
I studied in Leuven for 7 years and was member of a small student club. We also had a doop which was more like voluntary drinking with friends.
Everybody in Leuven knew that there were some bad apples in Reuzegom. But this is astounding.
I hope the people responsible get their deserved punishment!
How long do people stay in student clubs? It's basically completely new people every ~5 years right? I don't fucking get Doop. Just go drink and get to know new people. Dumbass fucking rituals have cost enough lives over the years.
I was only an active member for 3 years. Afterwards my focus was on my extra studies, work and gf.
In my opinion being An active member isn't a bad thing. But being a member of a group of toxic people can bring out the worst in people.
And in most clubs (not associated with the university) doop is still normal, with voluntary decisions. This is more a case of torture and (involuntary) murder.
This story just saddens me. A Young man has died, lost his life and a shitload of people lost a friend/family member.
I don't want to sound disrespectful by focussing on the fact that the club responsible has always had a bad reputation, it just is something that has to be dealt with. People Sting? Fuck, people doing anything against their will is a violation of human right, and this should be treated as one!
Studentclubs are far smaller than the 'Kringen' which are affiliated with studies at the university. Because they're far smaller (membership of 20-30 mostly), they're a tight-knit group that members return to often long after their studies have completed.
Correct. I was part of a club, so no connection to the university at all. We were only 20 people, and had good times and good friendships within our club, and also with loads of other clubs.
Really, there was only 1 club that was notorious for agressive behaviour, and coincidence or not, it was Reuzegom.
To be fair, a doop is meant to be a bonding experience throughout your first year. And as I have experienced myself (our kring was known to be not very 'hard' during the doop), it really was bonding and i made a lot of friends during the mostly fun activities we did.
However, i know some clubs are harder on a doop than others, and i completely agree with you on that front, that it is a really dumb way to go.
How so bad apples?
Waarschijnlijk veel te oude sadisten die allang afgestudeerd zijn in de praeses.
In my experience it's actually the contrary that happens. It's the younger people who come straight out of their initiation year who feel like they are entitled to do to the new aspiring members what happened to them and worse. The old people more often try to prevent this from happening.
It's a one up game. Every year something worse needs to happen to the 'gedoopten' until this crazy stuff finds it way.
It's much worse in the US.
95% correct. The other 5% are disturbed.
These percentages are just guesses!
99% percent of statistics are just made up on the spot
I'm still studying in Leuven and part of a club within the SK, i'm the schachtenmeester on top of that. Reuzegom definitly has a history of these things remember the pig or the bunnies. On the other side I know a lot of clubs and people in those clubs who are far better people than most in Leuven. They should be punished without a doubt
This whole thing is so surreal to me. What exactly is going on in these peoples heads? What value do you gain out of having someone out naked in the cold and drenching them with water to the point of severe hypothermia? Where's the fun in that? I'd personally feel horrible if I had to do that to someone.
Lord of the flies. People unsecure and eager to fit in meet people unsecure and hungry for more power than they can handle.
To be more charitable towards people doing this kind of baptisms (even though I personally think it's not worth it - precisely because of stuff like this), adversity or stress that is shared by members of a group tends to create strong group bonds and a sense of community. I've talked to people who defended these practices (that they underwent themselves) and it seems they were aware that they sort of exploited a 'psychological hack' by artificially creating mildly traumatising circumstances. Maybe they were lying to themselves, but I don't really doubt that they really feel a stronger bond with their also-baptised classmates, although I also don't doubt that some of those people are also power-hungry assholes.
Of course, there is a wild difference between some of the milder baptisms, and the ill-advised, harebrained power trips, lack of foresight, and a staggering ignorance of the human body that lead to situations like the situation in the news article.
What exactly is going on in these peoples heads?
Repressed homosexual tendencies.
Yeah they must be homos, in the closet for their sexuality...
Because forcing young men to strip, putting them in holes and then peeing on them is so heterosexual.
Don’t forget about the doop ritual of making “slightly feminine” young men take the whole pack of birth control pills to see if they turn into a woman. Besides the fucking doop of inserting suppositories or other objects into their own rectum and electric shocks in the balls from loose wires on the street...
I find those "doop"s discusting. Let it be a challenge but don't put lifes in danger nor humiliate people that are already vulnerable
Have you read to open letter LOKO put out? Normally there's a set of rules that a kring has to sign for the doop, but apparently reuzegom isn't tied to LOKO
Reuzegom apparently refused to sign LOKO's charter and also refused to work with the "student cop" of Leuven's local police. Those things are intended to avoid horror stories like this.
Clubs that refuse to sign that charter should simply be banned.
Banning them wouldnt work I believe. Most clubs have long histories, in case theyre banned most will just keep going underground.
ah yes prohibition always works out. It is known.
[deleted]
"Vrijheid van vereniging" is part of our constitution, there's no way to ban them.
Not easy to ban a club that isnt in any way connected to the university though :/
Yeah but to be fair to them, A̶l̶m̶o̶s̶t̶ ̶n̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶l̶u̶b̶s̶ ̶s̶i̶g̶n̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶h̶a̶r̶t̶e̶r̶ so its not like they are the exception there.
Edit: only 15-20 of 50 clubs in the SK, (there are many more clubs not in SK) signed the charter
True, but they are the exception that hits the national news every 2-3 years with a story like this.
Almost none is not entirely accurate.
Momenteel tekenen 36 faculteitskringen het charter vanuit LOKO, 70 erkende verenigingen en nog 15 à 20 studentenclubs. Maar niet alle studentenclubs houden zich aan het charter.
Still wrong, there are also student clubs which are not affiliated with the SK but who have signed the charter. So there are even less SK clubs who have signed the charter. I've asked a LOKO person for the correct number. And there are more like 30-40 SK clubs btw.
Edit: I got a reply, exactly 0 SK clubs signed the charter. 15 other student clubs did. Those other student clubs don't have initiations like SK clubs, often even many times less extreme than initiations by faculty-bound student organisations. Most of those 15 clubs don't even have initiations.
No but to be fair I am a student myself. I have a lot of friends in different "studentenverenigingen" and they all had to do something humiliating or some sadistic tasks which i find completely stupid. What is LOKO if I may ask?
Leuvense overkoepelende kringorganisatie. The "kringen" are associated to each faculty and thus have official representation in the university. All of these signed the "doopcharter" which prohibits use of alcohol for instance at official initiation activities. Doop is almost always never mandatory "bij de kringen".
Old article about doopcharter. I can't seem to find the full charter but I used to have it somewhere. The last paragraph of that article does show the guy had no clue what happens at a doop bij de Leuvense kringen.
Student clubs , in Leuven at least, are mostly bound to region and are a lot less regulated (if at all). They are united in the SK (Senioren Konvent) but don't really have much representation in the university.
LOKO is an organisation that unifies all student groups (leuvense koepel).
And why would they sign the charter? Clubs are not associated with LOKO.
First of all condolences to the family of the victim.
I have taken part in a doop twice now. Once in a club that signed the charter, and once in a club that didn't. To be honest, if I had to redo one, I'd redo the one without the charter.
The charter is just too limiting to clubs, because with it it's basically just rolling in the mud, smearing onion sauce in your hair and eating weird stuff like wet dog food.
In the other doop I did stuff like droppings, had to stay awake for 2 days, had to drink a lot of Cara and occasionally some tabasco-laced drinks. But nothing you can't handle. It really helped me bond with other people because together you look for a way back home at the dropping and you look for ways to cheat (like having your peers try to throw away the cara you have to drink while the supervisors or 'temmers' aren't looking) and that's the purpose of the doop. I never once felt at danger, they asked us if we had specific allergies or other things they had to take into account. They consulted a doctor on beforehand for everything they would use, even when they never used anything that could be considered dangerous, but just to be sure.
Reuzegom has had a bad reputation for a while now and probably has lost sight of what the purpose is of a doop. Their way of executing a doop was completely wrong, as unfortunately was proven this week.
What I'd propose is not to force the clubs to sign the KU Leuven charter, but to maybe let SK make their own with some general rules, and maybe have a doctor check everything the 'schachten' have to eat or drink. Because I'm just afraid the charter is too reactionary to the bad few doop's and overlooking the doop's where things go well and no one feels degraded or at danger.
If you have any questions, just ask. I'm open for discussion.
'Temmers'? How do people not realize how stupid this sounds? I just can't understand why people voluntarily want to go through this humiliating shit to be part of a group of people who were stupid enough to do the same things for a silly 'doop'.
But then again, there's generally too little awareness on peer pressure and things like de doop or alcohol consumption. At the school of my sibling, pupils take shots of alcohol with them. A fellow student of mine was saying how she thought it was okay that some assholes pee on other students, just to be a part of their group. Why would you want to be a part of people who want to pee on you and do horrible things? I wasn't part of any student group and still made a few very good friends.
I don't agree with humiliating stuff like peeing on others. I think a doop should be allowed, as long as it is executed well. Which means not humiliating or endangering others. I don't want to be part of a group like that either, so stop generalising please.
But nothing you can't handle.
This case seems to beg to differ.
Yes. I'm saying that's how it should be. The world should also be a peaceful place where everyone can be themselves, but the world isn't. I don't get the point of your comment.
The doopcharter is perfect for large scale dopen with dozens if not hundreds of students. It's not perfect for studentclubs who often have fewer than 5 new members.
Yes that too. You just can't organise droppings etc. for 25+ people but it's pretty easy to have them roll around in all kinds of shit.
Don’t know why you’re getting downvotes. Yours is one of the few reason able opinions Ive seen here.
Thanks, but I assumed I wouldn't get many upvotes. I think it's just a sensitive subject, and a lot of people are pretty far removed from the situation, so they can't really judge it that well.
I just want a solution to this. Abolishing student clubs won't happen, and the charter won't make the situation any better because clubs will just work their way around them, one loophole is legally basing the club in another town, e.g. legally Reuzegom could be based in Antwerp instead of Leuven and bam, no need to sign any charter.
Instead I say let the student clubs make a charter themselves, so they can still do droppings and other stuff but more regulated. Have everything reviewed by a doctor for example, give him a list of what you will do and what the students will ingest during the doop. Technically, making them drink nasty stuff like fish oil wasn't even prohibited by the KU Leuven charter. I had to ingest dirty stuff during my first doop, which was in accordance with the charter. Right now we have a charter that can't be enforced, because no one has signed it. So I say make one that might be a bit more loose, but that you actually can enforce. Because now the charter is a useless piece of paper.
Secondly a lot of people don't see the need for a doop. Of course, you can make friends without joining a student club. Before I joined a student club, I had a lot of friends already, so that wasn't why I did it. It's just something extra for me, it's a nice addition to the student life, and you learn a lot of things from it, and just get access to a whole new part of social life. But again, it isn't a necessity and I see why people wouldn't want to join, and they have perfectly good reasons for that .
Lastly, it's not supposed to be about degrading others. It's supposed to be a challenge you get through together and that forms a bond. If a doop only consists of peeing on others and humiliating them, it's not a doop imo. It's an excuse for students to have their little power trip. Again, you don't need a doop to form strong bonds with others, but it's a way to do it.
Again, I perfectly understand why a lot of people wouldn't do it, but I'm just trying to shed a light on why other people still do it and why it might actually not be a bad thing. If executed well, a doop is a nice experience for all involved, so don't judge them solely on those that aren't executed well.
Is eating wet dog food not humiliating enough?
Well yeah, but pretty tame compared to what's going on at other clubs. The club where the kid died (Reuzegom) was known for peeing on their naked 'schachten' so I guess eating a bit of dog food isn't the worst. What Reuzegom did was of course completely out of bounds, but as I said, I preferred my second doop where eating disgusting stuff didn't happen.
I got an immediate downvote as well, looks like the reddit gods are angry today. I just don't understand mate. Why not keep it to fun challenges where people bond instead of forcing them to drink a lot of alcohol, eat disgusting stuff and possibly incur bodily harm? Brutal baptisms just alienate part of the student body that might want to join but does not want to be baptised. And I'm sure you'll agree that the argument "but we [the supervisors] had to do it ourselves, now it's your turn" is absolute bollocks.
So taking into account wet-lejeune, they should be facing 3 to 5 years of imprisonment.
That's a bit unnuanced, no? They didn't intend or plan to do something harmful with the unintended consequence of death. They intended to do something stupid/'funny' (which ended up being something harmful because of ignorance) with the unintended consequence of death. A big difference.
They should still be punished, though.
It's tragic for all parties concerned, but whoever organized this "studentendoop" really made critical mistakes. It reminds me of the Nintendo incident in USA a few years ago where a woman died of water intoxication.
The student who died was probably under the assumption that what he was doing would at most result in being sick for a few days, and that the people in charge made sure of this.
It also looks like they were almost succesful in killing him tweice, once with the fish oil and once by dropping his temperature so low that he was at risk of dying.
Obviously we don't know the facts and we will never know all the facts, but with what's presented I have a hard time finding arguments against harsh punishments.
Harsh punishments, sure. I agree. But perhaps not charge them with something that doesn't fit. Unless of course they truly have a history of forcing people to do dangerous things, that changes the story.
There should definitely be punishment because whether they acted maliciously or not, they took on the role of responsibility and they were trusted by their victims.
Lastly I don't understand how university students of all people can be so stupid they don't just google their plans in advance: "Hey Google can I drink large quantities of fish oil? No? Ok thanks." That's all that it would have taken. In the very best case there has been serious neglect.
perhaps not charge them with something that doesn't fit
opzettelijk verwondingen of slagen toebrenge includes poisoning, which I think fits
I do not for a second believe they didn’t know that putting someone in the cold and making them drink large amounts of salt wasn’t harmful.
Of course they intended to do harm. Isn’t that what a doop is about? Humiliating them and hurting them, a little, with the intent to forge camaraderie?
I would argue that their history of refusing to sign the doop charter shows that they intended to do more than have a bit of reasonable, harmless fun.
No, the charter is just too strict. It's a set of rules that's too strict because it was a knee-jerk reaction to all the bad press surrounding the doop.
I'm not going to say a charter is unreasonable, but the fact that nearly none of the clubs signed it is more of a sign that the gap between clubs and the KU Leuven is way too big. They should be a bit more lenient. Right now the charter is useless because it can't be enacted. They should consider a new one with rules the clubs can agree to, like maybe having to have a doctor check which products you can feed the 'schachten' etc.
When the clubs sign it, it'll be an actual usefull charter because then there will finally be a set of rules to follow, as opposed to having a set of rules no one follows.
If all kringen can sign it and survive it's not too strict.
The stories we heard back in the day from Reuzegom were pretty close to human rights abuse. It's not something stupid/funny, it's damn close to torture.
I don't know them at all. Can you elaborate?
There was one a few years ago in which the schachten (students wanting to join the club) had to raise a pig for some time and then they had to slaughter it. The issue was that they didnt follow the Belgian guidelines on how to kill the animal. IIRC they shot out its brain while it was conscious. I think the same generation schachten also had to kill rabbits by slicing their throat.
The stories are very similar to what's described in de standaard today. Having to dig a hole, sit in it for 12-24h with all initiates, half-naked, while older members haze them, peeing on them to keep them "warm". How does one get a 28 degrees C body temperature in normal conditions?
A few years back someone broke his neck because the studentclub put him between 2 matrasses and threw him off a flight of stairs
Think of it for a second: these guys are not stupid, they are university students who can put two and two together. Imagine being in front of half-naked people outside in the cold and tossing water on them, how can you not feel like you are harming them if you don't get them warm asap? Doesn't take a genius to understand hypothermia. Have you ever seen someone being cold? These signs show pretty quickly.
Honestly people are fucking dumb. I don't think that would hold up in a court as evidence of their intent. Again: Sure, severe negligence without a doubt. At the end of the day someone died at their hands and their unwillingness to conform to generalized agreements. They should get a severe punishment and being banned from being part of a student org regardless.
Doesn’t matter if they intented the outcome as long as the act was intentional. Eg. Pushing someone as a joke is intentional, even if you didn’t want him to stumble and break his neck.
Is that the law, though?
Doesn't seem logical to have someone charged with "intentionally causing injuries" when there was zero intent to cause injuries and they weren't aware it would cause injuries to begin with.
I'm not an expert on the law, though, so there's that.
Yep that’s the law . They acted intentionally even if they didn’t want the outcome.
Stupid/funny
Uh, they atleast surely wanted to see the 'schachten' suffer.
Articles 402–405 are specifically about administering harmful substances, which seems to be a better fit in this case:
Art. 404. Indien de stoffen opzettelijk worden toegediend, maar zonder het oogmerk om te doden, en toch de dood veroorzaken, wordt de schuldige gestraft met [opsluiting] van vijftien jaar tot twintig jaar.
So with Wet-Lejeune, that'd become 5 to 7 years.
Would it apply since fish oil in and of itself is not a harmful substance?
Isn't every poison not harmful if the dose is low enough?
The way I read it, if you administered a substance that caused harm, you're guilty of administering a harmful substance. So yes, it would apply to gratuitous amount of fish oil.
Yes, I would agree. Thank you for correcting.
that would be an exceptionally wrong classification of that event.
there was never the intent to beat him our cause him harm (or at least I don't think so). They didn't beat the crap out of him. There was no criminal intent.
*onopzettelijke* slagen en verwondingen is what you are looking for.
opzettelijk verwonden includes poisoning; the poisoning was intentional and premeditated, cause they didn't accidentally find 2 liters of fishoil
...but what if they were to dumb to realize that much fish oil would be poisonous?
"zonder het oogmerk om te doden"

What is this even a response to?
W:hat: ?
Some dude said "the jails are full of migrants" and I was confused as to who or what that was aimed at.
This is terrible. Student clubs like these abusing the naivety of new students that only want to make some friends. In my first year, the praesis of the faculty student club made a grand speech about how great this is for bonding and for creating friends for life. Bullshit. I made a lot of friends in college without humiliation, forced drinking or eating nasty shit.
Also: Student clubs receive government subsidies. All student baptisms are subsidized.
edit: fake news
Also: Student clubs receive government subsidies. All student baptisms are subsidized.
Not true. Those are kringen (in Leuven, Gent uses different terminology). Clubs don't receive subsidies.
Also, Leuven's doopcharter explicitly forbids any kind of alcohol as long as the doop takes place. Even doopmeesters cant drink a beer until the doop is completely finished. You're also obligated to submit everything you're going to do to the police. This was a club (so not tied to the university in any way) and unfortunately they didn't sign the doopcharter :/
What Leuven are you thinking of? They squeal like pigs drunk and high during the doops, like any doopmeester really is obeying all the rules... And if you are also saying that it is so innocent, don't forget the part of the doops that include inserting foreign objects into your own genitals.
euhm... I think you’re a bit biased, never seen anything like that in the official clubs(kringen) and I have never even heard of a club where they insert stuff in their genitals during the baptisms.
Ok, my bad. In Ghent the clubs get subsidies.
[deleted]
In Ghent, every club that belongs to a "konvent" is officially recognized by the University and receives their fair share of subsidies. However, not every expense is eligible. See http://student.ugent.be/administratie/ for any and all documentation on subsidies (the UGent baptism charter can also be found here).
Are those that do not sign the charter also subsidized?
Nope. In order to receive subsidies, you must be recognised by LOKO which involves signing the charter.
No clubs are subsidised, only the verenigingen that are monitored by KUL
Clubs can get subsidised, if they sign the charter by LOKO. I am currently in a student club (that’s not based on a region, but on common interests) and we gladly signed LOKO’s charter
Hee wieslandia?
I seem to recall a similar story a while back where a student went into coma after being forced to drink 10 liters of water. She was lucky enough to survive. Apparantly nothing was learned from that event.
She was not forced to drink water and it was not 10 liters
She just chose not to have beer during an event with drinking games
That's not 10L
These were the same guys that were sentenced a couple of years ago for harassing and killing a piglet right?
Yup.
I have no idea what "fish oil" exactly is, let alone what it's used for, no way in hell I would think about how it could even be remotely funny forcing someone to take it as a "prank" or "proving themselves." Never really liked student clubs primarily because I didn't see the point of voluntarily humiliating yourself to prove you're one of the real boys/girls, but hey each his own right.
They mean fish sauce, which is a condiment that contains 10-30% salt.
They had to drink 1 or 2 liters of fish sauce, so they would be ingesting hundreds of grams of salt in a very short time span, which will cause the body to draw lots of water out of cells (high volume hypernatriemia)
Fish oil would be Omega 3 pills or something; that obviously doesn't contain any salt.
Some sources speak of fish sauce.
Must be fish sauce, fish oil doesn't contain a lot of salt.
it was 3 liter for 3 people.
Let's all please remember that these are not the normal "doops"/baptisms from student kringen/clubs/verenigingen. In Ghent these are highly regulated. Every student kring (I honestly don't know whether a proper translation exists) in Ghent is overseen by the Faculteiten Konvent (FK) committee. I've done this 3 times and never have I had to do something I didn't like or whatever you read in the papers. These people didn't sign any decree regarding what they can and cannot do, unlike all of the other kringen/clubs/verenigingen.
The other cities should look at Ghent, and these clubs should be held to the same standards. I hope justice is served.
Same thing in Leuven with LOKO and the doopcharter. What happend here is tragic but generalising all clubs clubs just doesn't make sense. Reuzegom can't be compared to other clubs (and definitely not to kringen).
I'm also baptized in a club and a kring, but I have seen parts of baptisms of other clubs in Ghent that horrified me. Some polo wearing clubs was shouting at 2 of their schachten who were sitting on their knees in the gutter of the Overpoort and they kicked 1 down. I fear that those polo clubs will fuck it up bigtime for FK/SK/HK or other clubs who are bound to some kind of decree.
HAH. I know of at least one large Ghent club which still has excessive hazing rituals.
Which one? A club also isn't a kring fyi. Have they signed the charter?
The one whose members name is associated with horses and dicks, so yes, that's a kring, and yes, they signed the charter
I went to a school in Antwerp which was the breeding ground for a lot of Reuzegom members. They're a bunch of rich kids who never had to deal with the consequences of their actions. And when I heard some of the stories about reuzegom from some of my mutual friends I was shocked.
I myself was "gedoopt" by a club in Wilrijk, and even the worst clubs in Wilrijk (looking at you DIEFKA) don't hold a candle to what Reuzegom does during and outside of it's "Doop". Reuzegom is the prime example of affluenza gone wrong, a bunch of rich kids egging each other on to be as gross as possible. There's a reason why Cafe "In Den Boule" in Leuven is surrounded by vomit almost every day...
OLV?
Close, olvc
The hazing really went too far in this case. I feel so bad for the kid's parents.
Wow, not very often that the town I live in and the city I study in are connected in the same article. A friend of mine footballed with him. Very sad stuff.
Dat dit nog gebeurt anno 2018, fucking backward people.
Surreal that someone has to die this way. Never understood why people would voluntary do a doop at this level.
My hope is that the perpetrators will be punished but then again we have a shitty justice system, so who am I kidding.
Elaborate on why we have a shitty justice system?
Not a big fan of the law Lejeune. Criminals get out too early this way.
I thought the popularity of these studentclubs had dropped to zero near the end of the nineties. Has there been a resurgence ? Mindboggling that this shit still going on.
Back in my student days I would rather have stuck needles in my eyes then join such a club. Never did see the appeal.
3 people participated in this hazing, so yes it dropped to near zero.
EDIT: 3 people participated to be on the receiving end of this hazing
For clubs you have to be chosen, 3 is a normal number , not for a kring or vereniging.
Ok, thanks for correcting
What near zero? I baptised 110~ students a year just a few years back.
Dom dom dom.
reu-ze-gom
I wish the term "doop" would become protected disallowing the clubs who refuse to sign a basic set of rules designed for safety from using it. You want to torture your newcomers or see them naked? Fine but you can't call yourself a student club and you will have to give your initiation ritual a more accurate name like "entry torture" or "slut scouting".
And how would you enforce it? They aren’t bound to anything like a school
Jezus Christ, what a tragedy for his parents and family. You spend so much time and effort trying to raise your kid to be a good and succesfull adult, only to lose him right on adulthoods' doorstep.
