Can I cheap out on the motherboard? CPU?

Here's my build as it stands: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HF47Hh

I already got a 1070 ti and that's what I'm building around. What's the point in getting a more expensive motherboard? My research tells me it has to do with how it handles overclocking and what ports it has, but if I'm not going to overclock, am I "safe" to buy the cheapo motherboard I selected?

The CPU I selected is an 8100 and is way cheaper than anything else at the 3.6 GHz range. Am I missing something? Is the architecture that much worse than other CPU's in that generation or is it still fine?

I plan mostly on gaming and a bit of streaming. Also I'm aware my monitor choice sucks and I'll be upgrading to a g-sync monitor in the next 6-ish months.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would guess one of the ryzen2 cpus would be cheaper as would the motherboard. Have never seen any huge benefits other than what u said. You get more ports. Possibly more nvme ssd and sata ports. Maybe slightly better cooling options.

How about building it right instead?

This is much better

Should I be worried about pairing an amd CPU with an nvidia gpu? Can't that cause problems?

Is it the 2 extra cores that make the ryzen 2600 so much better?

Pairing AMD with Nvidia doesn't matter.

The 2600 has two extra cores, a better stock cooler, and hyper threading. Its single core performances is marginally better than the 8100.

Not at all, all the CPUs and GPUs are cross-compatible these days. +1 on the Ryzen 5, it's just excellent value compared with what Intel offers.

CPU:

  • The i3-8100 is a capable 4-core CPU, no hyperthreading. It's equivalent of previous-gen i5's (Skylake, Kaby Lake).

  • The newer i5's have 6 cores (again, no hyperthreading), which some games will make use of, and may come in handy for streaming. For some games, the extra cores will make no difference.

  • The Ryzen 5 2600 has 6 cores/12 threads. While the per-core performance is somewhat slower than the new Intels, the difference isn't huge, and it will still do great with a 1070 ti. Again, the extra cores/threads are useful for streaming, and in some multicore-heavy games. Price-wise, it's more than the i3's, less than the i5's.

Motherboard:

  • For the i3 selected, consider going down to a B360 or H370, if you're looking to save money. There's no reason to get Z390 here.
