Magnetize all the things?

40k

Just getting started with Tau and I’m loving having my coldstar commander fully magnetized. He is literally my first Tau model. My main army has always been Tyranids, so this looks to be quite a different play style.

As I build out my army, what models aside from the battle suits will benefit from being magnetized? What are the weapons I’ll want to use most and need to obtain more than what’s in the box? And lastly, how hard is it to magnetize broadside suits? I know that general consensus is that the missile pods are better but I love the look of the railguns.

Any suggestions on what to buy and build next are appreciated!

Tau is very easy to magnetise overall as its mostly just weapons attached to arms. The only things I don't bother magnetising is infantry like strike teams but almost everything else I magnetise where I can and there is weapon options.

As for Broadsides, I have magnetised one in the past but its not idea. I basically magnetised in the arm ball joints which worked well for the HYMP but for the HRR I had to also magnetise the arm onto the gun and when it was all together the gun drooped. Probably could have been done with stronger magnets and then I wouldn't have the same issue.

In the ball joints I have a magnet and pin, the pin helps hold the arms at a certain angle :-)

Broadside was a bitch to magnetise. You need big magnets and a way to pin because the gun always wants to point down.

I would magnetise one stealthauit to switch for a fusion blaster.

The pathfinders for the special weapons.

Dont glue the top of drones with the bottoms.

Riptide is easy to magnetise.

You can magnetise the bottom of the pirana too. It was easy.

Actually, you can simply slice the rail part of the railrifle off and cut the missiles from the arms to create either an interchangeable rail rifle or “missile rifle”.

Here's my XV88 Broadsides in all their modified goodness. Even if you don't love the look there's still a few ideas to help.

Two magnets in the HYMP and on the side of the chassis stop them rotating once in place as opposed to one larger magnet. Still strong enough to pick up the model from though. If you wanted to do this with arms I'd suggest kinda what I did here. Greenstuff around the point of contact. If you filled in the area around the ball joints and turned it into a solid block (A small one though) you might find it easier to fit two larger magnets in to stabilise the pose of the model with a railgun and HYMP despite their weight - which isn't really that much. You'd want to cut off te ball joint inside the block though so the sides of the chassis are smooth. Might be a bit of an undertaking.

The way to go about any of this though is through testing. Get some magnets (rare earth ones for sure) and see how much weight they can take. When/if you decide to magnetise, heat up a paperclip or use a tiny drill bit to start your hole. Just a dot to guide the larger drill bit for your magnet. It helps prevent the drill bit moving around and misplacing the hole which can lead to your models not having the pose you want (a few of mine are like this The railgun being slightly to one side. Also added some greenstuff to the top for a level pad to have the rail gun sit.).

As for the smaller weapons, I've got magnets everywhere they can go on although if I'm using a railgun on these suits I use the HYMP as count as SMS. It reminds me of a Stormsurge that way. For XV8 Crisis suits, I've put magnets on the top of both jetpacks and on the outside of the forearms. This lets me give them three weapons or support systems and still look stylish.

If you just want to do smaller weapons, 3mmx1mm rare earth magnets will do fine and if you have a drillbit that's 3mm, it's way too easy. Like, magnetise all the small weapons! Also lets me swap out the burstcannons/flamers/ABFC for my Stormsurge as there's magnets there as well as the main barrel. The Stormsurge only comes with one rear gun housing bit thing.

The main thing to magnetise is the suits. Some people magnetize Pathfinders (to swap between special weapons and markerlights, but I'd just save the weapons you got left over and if those ever get more popular (which they might have with Chapter Approved) you could just get another box and outfit all of them with special weapons) and even Strikers/Breachers (but that seems ridiculous). The Hammerhead Railgun/Ion Cannon could be magnetised as well, I just use a lump of blue-tack currently.

Broadsides are a bit tricky, there is a lot of weight having of of those shoulders. Some people convert the railgun so that you can attach missiles instead of the barrel, and that can look pretty good. I magnetised mine in the shoulders (and the left arm-rifle connection) but it didn't work out great, I'm planning on adding a pin as well to add strength.

With the latest Chapter Approved there looks to be some significant changes, I don't know it we've seen them all yet. A lot more of the Crisis weapons (and the Crisis themselves) seem viable now, but CIBs are still probably the kings (which means buying from a third party). Plasmas got significantly cheaper, as did Missile Pods.

Hammerhead turrets and maybe breachers. If you aren't strictly playing wysiwyg then you can switch between breachers and strikers by magnetizing the arm holding the weapon and switch between pulse blasters and pulse rifles.

Generally speaking you will want your commander to have 3 or 4 of the same weapon and all models in your crisis suit squad (min of 3 models) to carry the same weapons as each other. Therefore you will have to go on ebay or miniswap to fully equip your models. Fusion blasters are the most common weapon on coldstar commanders. Cyclical ion blasters are the most common weapon on regular crisis suits. Unfortunately, only commander kits have the CIB and it comes with only one. You will have to go to third party sites to fully equip a squad of crisis suits unless you get lucky on ebay or miniswap. Burst cannons and flamers are decent against horde armies and missile pods may now see some use due to their point reduction.

Best way, imo, to magnetize a broadside is to create a "missile rifle".

Not mine

Basically you cut off the barrel of heavy rail rifle and magnetize it along with one of the HYMPs.
