My Christmas Tradition

Short background: My ex-mother-in-law used to wrap gifts that were like works of art. Beautiful with bows, ribbons, raffia, flowers, whatever she thought looked nice. Every year, my ex-husband used to complain that he couldn't get his gift unwrapped because she used so much tape that he couldn't get his finger in through the wrapping paper.

I always thought this was a bit rude, considering it was his own mother, and she put forth a lot of effort and time to wrap pretty presents for us. I do not wrap gifts this extravagantly, but every year when I ship his gift to him from the children, I make sure there is no way he can easily slide his finger through the paper to unwrap his. I tape the fuck out of it. For his wife, I just wrap her gift normally.

This gives me a bit of wicked glee during the holiday season as I imagine his annoyance at unwrapping his gift, with his wife sitting there with her gift in her lap already. I've been doing this for few years, and today I had to share with someone who would understand and appreciate :)

You could combine this with something my Nanna used to do. She didn't want her presents to be easily identifiable so she would wrap the gift, then place it in a bigger strange shaped box and wrap it again.

See how many layers of impenetrable tape you can create.

Ok Satan.

We have one of those every year in my family. Thankfully I have never been the recipient, because that would only piss me off. It's nbn usually my brother or my sister's boyfriend.

Yes, for the record, I'm a grinch.

I am Satan, I say, if you haven't used an entire roll of gorilla tape and 50 yards of industrial plastic wrap, you haven't properly sealed the gift behind the gates of hell yet.

I once sent a nine-layer parcel, each layer covered in parcel tape, and with a warning the gift in the middle was delicate. In the centre was a promise the gift would be in the next parcel.

I REMEMBER! I have prepared a place of honor for you in my depths, you shall be my right hand when your day comes.

My best friend actually was OG Satan when he took the opportunity of dropping his brother off at the airport to bring his Secret Santa Christmas gift with him and use the suitcase wrapping station to basically seal that fucker for the apocalypse.

I had to open that bitch with a chef knife

Santa is just Satan spelled wrong.

I once saw someone open a gift that had plastic wrap wrapped around it so much that the layer was like 3 inches thick. It took them almost 10 minutes to open it.

thermal lance*

would have taken about 3 seconds.

I do this as well as wrapping several layers of newspaper under the wrapping paper. I use lots of tape on the newspaper and wrapping paper so my husband can’t peek! He’s like s little kid at Christmas, but I love that man!!

My dad used to do that to us, but he would always put a brick in one of the boxes. One year he got creative and had 10 layers of boxes in boxes and then the gift was hiding in the closet.

I once Russian nesting dolled a gift card from a tiny box all the way to a washing machine box for a good friend just to screw with him.. Took him an hour and a half to get the gift card.

Lol i hope he bought himself something nice with it after all that effort.

This is perfect. You should also take that gift and put it in a bigger box equally wrapped so it’s difficult to open.. then repeat so it’s like one of those dolls

I have thought about that, but I am afraid it would be more obvious that I’m being petty! It would be downright hilarious for sure, but I think the subtlety of Scotch Magic Giftwrap tape on every seam of wrapping paper works out well for my purposes lol

30
randominternetdood•

wrap it in confetti and 7 rolls of tape.

kecin25•

Put it in a bigger box with rocks. That way they don’t know what it is

Love it! My petty tradition with my ex happens every birthday. My daughter gets at least one kiddy instrument/noisy AF toy from someone every year. And every year, the noisy AF (more expensive so he can’t complain) gifts somehow make it in the box going to my ex’s house. To date, she has at least four keyboards and one duck whistle at daddy’s house.

No, she has four keyboards at dad's house that have dead batteries and a duck whistle that accidentally fell in the toilet and was ruined.

"Tape the fuck out of it" made me crack up. I enjoyed this greatly. Thank you.

That’s the best way I could think of to describe it!

One of my sisters used to wrap presents with duct tape. As in, she'd cover every inch of the wrapping paper with duct tape.

rickee_lee•

I really want to do this to my fiancé but he literally carries a pocket knife everywhere he goes so he would get it open no problem. Makes it way less fun 😂

8
VolunteerBadger•

Cloth-backed tape makes this quite a lot more difficult!

Thanks!

In addition to this, can you get your hands on some "foil" (shiny) wrapping paper that's actually made of Mylar (harder to tear than paper, so he has to tear the tape)?

scaram0uche•

Yes! That stuff is a paiiiin!

Oh my gosh one year you should gift him a matryoshka doll (those Russian dolls that fit a doll inside of each other) and in the very smallest one put a little note that says Merry Christmas. On top of you taping the fuck outta the box I feel like that'd be an extra level of petty (though he probably wouldn't open them all)

8
dragonheartstring1OP•

Bwahaha, that would be so funny!! Merry Christmas lol

Every year I used to get a present where it had been wrapped normally and then completely wrapped in duct tape.

We used to make my grandmother a surprise hamper. We would buy things in tins from ethnic shops, take the labels off and put them.all.in a beautifully wrapped hamper. Instead of tape we used a whole roll of string to wrap it.

I am so impressed with your Christmas Tradition! 😄😂🎄🎄 Lets drink to a smart woman.🥂.

Use flex tape from now on instead. All memes and stuff aside, that stuff is too sticky for its own good and so rubberized you can’t get your finger under it.

3

LMFAO....EPIC!

I'm willing to bet if you told his wife the reason behind all this she would enjoy it right along with you, maybe even video it so you can see your handy work play out! ;)

3
DarkNymphetamine•

It sounds like a revenge that your ex-husband richly deserves.

3
Ultimation12•

My grandma used to be the duct tape queen. Whenever a present was in a big box (usually smaller presents all in one box), it would be pretty much sealed tight with lots of duct tape.

Why is he an ex.... What happened

To write what happened would fill a book!

We call it uncle Jimmy wrapped. He literally does this.

I never liked the simple box thing at Christmas so I would make a few of my own. I would make some pyramid shaped boxes, maybe wrap up a shirt to look like a Christmas cracker. Once I bought a little gold necklace for my mom and made a lovely little wooden box for it. Ok, I grabbed a piece of firewood 4” round by about 10” long and sawed through the length of it and hollowed out a nice area in the middle for the necklace to rest. That way her present when wrapped weighed about 2 pounds and did not look like jewelry.

Quenten01•

Why are you sending him gifts in the first place, sounds like you’re mad that he is with someone else

1
dragonheartstring1OP•

They are gifts from our children., because that’s the nice thing to do. Trust me, I don’t care at all about him being with someone else!
