[Troubleshooting]: Can not launch Civ 6 on Arch Linux

Hi everyone, a recent update seems to have caused this issue. When running steam-runtime / steam-native from console, this is what I see:

./gameGuide/Civ6: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Done_MM_Var arch

The suggested workaround I have seen so far is to launch the game using the following options

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 %command%

This does seem to launch something (i.e. steam says the game is running), but I dont see the game window. I think I have hit the limit of my google skills, so I was wondering if anyone has seen similar issues and if so, if they were able to solve them.

EDIT: I see the same behavior using both steam-runtime and steam-native packages.

EDIT 2: I have a workaround thanks to u/GaianNeuron https://reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/a98ct4/troubleshooting_can_not_launch_civ_6_on_arch_linux/ecia3h0?context=3

Thanks!

I've been skipping the launcher by running ./Civ6Sub instead. Just make sure you have the game's Steam AppID saved to a an adjacent steam_appid.txt file.

Hello. I don't quite get the trick with appid and 'adjacent'. Would you so kind as to explain this a bit?

If you go to steam store, each game will have a number as part of it's direct link. Copy that number to steam_appid.txt and save that file in th same directory as Civ6Sub. You can then cd into that directory from a terminal and launch civ by running "./Civ6Sub"

For me, setting the launch option to `LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 %command% ` solved it

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 %command%

This also worked for me

Did you let Steam verify your game files? That fixed it after the update for me.

Thanks, but I reinstalled as well as verified the game files. It didn't make any difference.

Try this launch option:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libopenal.so.1 %command%

Literally copy paste that into the steam game properties launch options just to clarify.

Thanks, but this didn't help. The behavior is the same with or without libopenal in LD_PRELOAD

The location of this lib differs on different distros. You need to find it first.

Launch

locate libfreetype.so.6

Needed lib will be in /usr folder. Make sure you selected the 64bit lib.

Thanks, I'm using the right path on archlinux.

In steam, set game launch-options

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 %command%
