Travis Green: Two guys get tangled. I've watched it a lot of times. It's not a dirty play by their player at all. He gets hooked a little bit. Petey actually pushes back on him a bit in a reverse hit... two young guys fall to the ice. It's not a penalty.

I'd probably call it a hooking penalty, but yeah.

149
9777•

Yeah there definitely should have been a penalty for either interference or hooking, but I don't really see intent to injure.

34
EsShayukiFinland - IIHF•

If that's interference, there's no 5v5 in any NHL game.

If Pettersson doesn't stop and try a reverse it's a nothing play no one remembers.

23
DaBestIsBlessed•

Then there would be about 600 pims a game.

22
jarret_gDET - NHL•

no doubt he was hooked, but is that a hooking penalty? What was the consequence of the hook? There was no puck race where Petterson lost ground because of the hook. Petterson didn't have possession and lose the puck because he was hooked.

If the NHL called every infraction by the book teams would play 3-on-3 an entire game. It's that gray area that makes great officials. You need to be sure that the action by the offending player lead to a consequence which was a detriment to the overall safety or flow of the game.

In this case, I just don't see a hook like this being called.

4†
BojarzinDET - NHL•

What was the consequence? Is that really the line people want to draw?

6
ComingUpWatersCOL - NHL•

Should we tell him?

1†
goodk1dMAADcity•

I think it’s a penalty since petterson was injured as a direct result but I agree if they skated off its officials discretion and there isn’t a single ref who calls that a hooking penalty

1
AnGrammerErrorVictoria Salsa - BCHL•

overall safety

uhhh you know a guy had his leg get all bendy the wrong way right? You know that's not safe right?

I don't see how you can make this comment with awareness.

-3†
jarret_gDET - NHL•

Even if you want to make that argument, it wasn't the hook that injured Petterson. He chose to stop and then got tangled. People that want a penalty call on this play just illustrate their lack of hockey knowledge and understanding and would completely ruin a game of ever given the chance to officiate

4
Jinxy_VAN - NHL•

It's definitely a hooking/interference penalty but the fall that caused the injury isn't. Maybe I'm biased, but to me it's textbook interference. Pettersson does not have the puck at any point when any of this transpires.

42
roboninjaEDM - NHL•

"Text book interference" happens uncalled around 50 times every game. This is just another one of those, albeit with an unfortunate outcome.

31
Jinxy_VAN - NHL•

Which is totally fine, I'm not saying the ref should be sentenced to death for not calling it. I just disagree that it's not a penalty. Technically, it is, and should always be called as such. Hockey is the only sport where it is okay for referees to call things as they see fit. It's not healthy imo.

3
burritobobEDM - NHL•

Amen brother.

2
indearthorinexcessVAN - NHL•

It only happens 50 times per game because refs don't call it.

-1†
HobpobkibblebobTBL - NHL•

I tend to agree, but I think it's being seen as a net front battle more than anything. That type of stuff happens all game every game in front of the net.

15
[deleted]•

They were headed up ice though right after Petey checked him into the boards. I don't consider it a net front battle. I think it was more unfortunate then dirty but the Canucks needed to show some kind of pushback. Whether that was laying the body or actually trying to win the game. I'm more angered at the Canucks response then the actual incident.

1†
DruggerNaut306BOS - NHL•

Battles happen when the puck is nearby. KK fucking hip tossed him after the play.

-10
HobpobkibblebobTBL - NHL•

Net front battles happen all the time without a puck around

4

  1. The puck wasn't even in the zone anymore.

  2. The weren't in front of the net.

Did you even watch the play?

-2†

Silly you! Don’t you know that that’s exactly what happens to star players in the NHL? Interfere with them on every game so they can’t play to their fullest potential and maybe (maybe) call 1 of those penalties?? Get it together man!

20
De_FloppssVAN - NHL•

He's right, the falling isn't the penalty but the hook/latch on by Kotka is definitely interference/hooking since the puck is nowhere near.

17
Untoldstory55PIT - NHL•

If Petey doesn't fall, he turns and gives kots a hell of a shot, and they both go to the box for roughing. That's most likely how it would've played out. I get it's a shitty situation, but Jesus, at worst, it's a missed penalty in early January, you'll recover. The injury had nothing to do with a penalty bring called or not.

20
hybrid3214VAN - NHL•

Petey stopped because the puck was on the boards just out of sight of the camera and it looked like it could become a turnover so he didn't want to keep going and possibly have Kotkaniemi wide open in front of the net. He wasn't trying to reverse hit him or anything he was just trying to play good D.

-7
HobpobkibblebobTBL - NHL•

I'm thinking it's being looked at more as a net front battle. This happens every game in front of the net.

11
nawgz•

How can it be a net front battle when the team with the puck has just exited their own zone and the interaction takes place in front of the defensive zone net as the attacker tries to skate away

7
HobpobkibblebobTBL - NHL•

Right I'm not saying that's necessarily the right argument. Just how they're looking at it. At the time they didn't know where it was going.

44
disiz_marekaVAN - NHL•

Meh, EP40 was in the slot. Always plenty of contact in front of the net, incidental and otherwise, most of which don’t get a call unless it directly affects the play.

Frustrating? You bet. Intentional? The interference yes, the injury, no. I think Kotkaniemi sincerely felt bad about it.

Yes people, hockey is played on ice, which is, y’know...slippery. Let’s just hope EP40 invokes his alien regeneration powers and comes back soon.

-19

The hook was well behind the play, it's not like they were just battling for position in the slot.

I must say I enjoy watching games on TSN where there announcers are non biased and don’t say stupid things. TSN broke that play down perfectly, yes he did hook him no he didn’t throw him down to the ice like these biased Vancouver sports etc announcers say he did.

-1†
disiz_marekaVAN - NHL•

Point taken. So, say Kotkaniemi gets an interference or hooking penalty? What then? And say the Canucks managed to score, and maybe even win the game without EP? Does that make the injury go away? Or is Guds supposed to run the guy and break his face?

WWEPD?

-15
HobpobkibblebobTBL - NHL•

I agree with you fwiw

1
Nonfuture•

From what I saw, Kotka did do a dumb reckless penalty (hooking and holding) so I don't quite understand anyone who defends Kotka in this play. This is a hyperbole (and I'm not saying Kotka had intent to injure and I don't think he did) but its like defending a person who went up to another to injure and ended up killing them. "This person didn't mean to kill the other person, just to hurt him" pretty dumb if you ask me. It's still manslaughter.

I originally wanted to use a different scenario but the only one I could think of right now was that one and a scenario in which a robber went to steal some petty cash and ended up stealing something much larger like a briefcase full of diamonds or something. But in this scenario the robber has intent to steal and just ends up stealing something else, which doesn't quite work.

TL;DR Kotka doesn't have intent to injure but still did an ill-advised illegal play, so I don't understand why ppl are defending him. It was a dumb act regardless of intent.

Equating a freak accident during a play to Burglary/Manslaughter.

The fuck are you on?

12
cyclicampPHI - NHL•

“A is to B as C is to D”

“What the fuck A and C aren’t the same thing how dare you try to use an analogy even though you went out of your way to specifically say you aren’t equating A and C and are trying to compare this one specific aspect of the situation in a discussion of intent vs. outcome using a familiar and well-understood legal example demonstrating culpability”

I don’t agree with the overall standpoint but it’s a perfectly reasonable one to hold and the thought behind it makes sense.

-1†
ytew6MTL - NHL•

You don't need an analogy to understand what happened during the play. Especially one that stupid.

It's right there on video.

They’re not arguing what happened, they’re arguing how wrong it was and how much responsibility lies with Kotka.

It's really sad when your own coach doesn't even stand up for you. I guess this is why nobody stood up for him. Petey deserves better than this team. I really hope his injury isn't serious and will be back soon.

14
dacara1615•

Did I ever ask for that type of reaction in my comment? Nope! People sure did make a big leap with this comment. Wow! Standing up for your teammate doesn't mean seriously injuring your opponent. His coach said there was no penalty and I've seen many people say there should've been a hooking or interference penalty. That's weak for his coach to say after his response to the Matheson shit that happened earlier in the season.
