What's the deal with exhaust systems on non turbo diesels?

I have inherited an old 2003 5L-E Hilux, and it's got a stonking great exhaust on it that sounds, in my opinion, terrible. It's LOUD.

I want to swap it to something else, and my research suggests that on these non-turbo models, larger exhausts swap low end grunt for more power at the top of the RPM spectrum. Is this correct? It certainly feels that way.

She could definitively do with more low down power, and if a smaller exhaust does that and gets rid of some of this racket, then that's what I'll do.

Can anyone confirm?

Adding more backpressure to the system should add in more low end torque. If youre doing a lot of towing or just dailying it i would suggest an exhaust system that has more back pressure and is quieter

Thanks. Yeah it's a bit of a daily, so I think a smaller exhaust is in order.

Thanks for your input.
