Speed cap for nearby and Pokemon spawns seems to be gone.

New Info!

Entire ride to work this morning nearby was updating and Pokemon were spawning. Most of the trip was at about 45MPH, never over that speed. The nearby updated during the entire trip. Pokemon spawned. Stops could not be spun, though. Anyone else seeing this?

EDIT: This seems to also correct the longstanding bug where the nearby disappears for no reason all of the time.

Eh. No. If they did this by mistake it's not something that they are going to just miss. And it isn't like it's not going to be reported somewhere else. So with that said, it may as well be here.

There is a rich history of Niantic not knowing (or at least not acknowledging) about specific mistakes in Pokemon Go until it went hot on TSR/Reddit...

I noticed on my way home last night that going highway speeds, my Go Plus was latching on and trying to catch. Normally it doesn't get anything on the highway. They definitely made some changes.

104
keklarOH•

I've always had my GO Plus recognize a Pokemon about every 10 minutes on the highway, but it will never catch.

34
AutomationAirSt. Louis, Mystic 40•

Mine would recognize the occasional Pokemon, but last night it was insane. It was latching on to them one after another. I take that route frequently and it's never latched on to that many.

15
thomasaquina•

Same thing for me this morning. Normally I only hit the random stop or two, maybe a few spawns, when I hit intersections. I must have spun 5-6 stops and caught 15+ on my drive today. Definitely a change.

7
curiouscomp30•

Same. This morn on my commute on the freeway, 60mph+, it tried to catch at least 6 or 7 mon. It’s never done that before.

3
0010MK•

You’re right. It will never catch. And under this situation, it actually doesn’t even use a poke ball.

1
dhanson865East TN LVL 40•

I was able to catch a pokemon while doing almost 70 mph on an interstate.

No go plus, just tapping and throwing like I was sitting still.

I haven't seen that sort of behavior since late 2016 or early 2017 (whenever the "I'm a passenger" alert got added).

3
RevenantMediaNebraska Mystic Lvl 40•

My Plus has always caught while I'm driving. Even about 60mph

-1
TarcanusPennsylvania [40x2]•

I had a couple spawns while I was on the highway going 60mph last night. But I chalked it up to that delay between when you start going faster and when you get the passenger pop up and the interval when pokemon spawn. I assumed it was just an instance of it all matching up perfectly.

I didn't get any other spawns after those while I was going fast.

42
Falafelmeister92•

You drive 60mph on the highway?

53
TarcanusPennsylvania [40x2]•

It depends on the highway. I've heard stuff out in the western states don't have posted limits because you can see for miles in all directions. Some toll roads and straighter highways have limits of 70 or 80mph. Other highway in busier areas only do 55mph.

14
AkalardMichigan, Lv 39 Valor•

I've had to explain the difference between highways and interstates to non-US friends and that could be what is going on here too.

25

so.. what's the difference?

7

Falafei is referencing the speed limit folks, that we are driving a snails pace at 60 mph compared to what speed they travel on the Autobahn

4
psykick32•

Yeah but for most places you go with the flow of traffic.

For example, I can go 75-85 in Chicago cause that's what everyone is going, if you actually go the speed limit you'll be the danger.

7
nolkel•

Every freeway has speed limits in California, Nevada, etc. The ones out in the middle of the desert typically have a limit of 70mph.

3
AdamGott•

In Idaho our freeways are mostly 80mph speed limits.

2
nsgiad•

Not true anymore about no posted limits in the west. Montana for a while had no daytime speed limits but they do now. That being said, if you can see for miles, then you can see cops and speed accordingly

As crazy as that sounds, but the USA have almost three times as many highway deaths per capita as Germany despite going a lot slower than Germans :)

None of those statistics take into account the type of vehicle either. Big trucks are common in the states and are more dangerous to the occupants in a crash than a normal sedan as they absorb less of the impact and transfer the forces to the occupants at an increased level. SUV's are similar. Here in Australia a lot of people buy large SUV/4 wheel drive vehicles thinking they are safer but don't understand that they are actually more dangerous.

On a side note, they are also slow and annoying when you drive a 6 litre V8 musclecar....

3

I blame how easy it is to get a license in the states.

It's not uncommon in America to find highways that was never supposed to be highways. Where I live, there's a road that was originally meant for people to take scenic 30 mph drives and roadside picnics. That road has since become "a highway" and has a posted 55 mph limit but has traffic flow anywhere from 45 to 70 depending on where you are (i.e., depending on curves, hills, weird on/off ramps, etc). It's really frustrating.

For anyone trying to guess, I'm talking about Rt. 5, which mirrors I-95 and I-91 through most of New England. "The parkway", "the Merritt", "the turnpike", etc.

Let's also not forget that we don't spend the money on our "highways" as you do for the Audubon.

I think I heard a figure once that the Audubon costs more per mile than all the roads and highways throughout my whole state combined. Quality vs. quantity.

Same here, usually get seem to get about 30 seconds before the game "catches up" and recognizes I'm moving. Go+ getting more shots is always appreciated though.

2
saggyfire•

Seems like an overall improvement to me. It's not like you don't have to tap an "I'm a passenger" button when you're in a car anyway. If it fixes the disappearing nearby and spawns then I'm all for it; I freaking hate seeing something cool and then every pokemon on screen disappears when I go to tap it (and I'm not even in a dang car!).

33
BerndHH•

The speed limit still seems to be in place when you're trying to spin pokestops. I managed a few catches while traveling to work by train this morning, but pokestops gave me the familiar "try again later" message and didn't drop anything.

I still remember the shady way they introduced the obnoxious speed lock in the first place. It was unannounced, late on a Friday.

16

It almost ruined the game for me. I don't think I really played for three or four months after that change. Hopefully this was intentional, and if it was not hopefully they read the comments here and see that people like it this way.

2
lmartins06Instinct - CT - Lvl 40•

Not really. If they really quit the game over that change then they weren’t committed to the game. Yeah it was a frustrating update but it didn’t take away from the game or the mission of the brand.

3
MiracoloX•

Same thing here. I took the train today and even at over 70mph my Go+ nonstop recognized spawns. The only problem is, everything runs away at such speed, so you‘re basically throwing away red balls, trying to catch everything. They should also lift these sofbans you get while catching above a certain speed, but they probably never will, so this new „bug“ might be useless in most aspects.

14
Snuhmeh•

At higher speeds, it isn’t actually throwing balls. Next time, check the red ball numbers ahead of time and then after the trip. I’d bet that the buzzing happens but the ball was never thrown.

15
goshe7•

Correct. If you move outside of range (which frequently happens at driving speeds) the Go+ just acts like a missed throw.

8
Samerz360Level 1 Collector•

I was getting successful catches at 80km/hr earlier today.

3
Snuhmeh•

Cool but the Go Plus doesn’t usually actually throw a ball that fast. If you’re successfully starting the encounter at that speed, that’s not unusual.

2
Samerz360Level 1 Collector•

Yeah, usually. But whatever they did last night changed that. If you press the button while you're in range it can now catch the pokemon, no matter what speed you're going.

2
MoshMunkeeGengar rules!•

i still firmly believe, if the Go Plus can register/alert you/buzz at stops/mons, then it should be able to catch/spin it. you don't need to look at the button to press it. it's much like if there is an itch on your arm, do you look at it first and then scratch it?

10
Azuril3Oregon•

Sometimes, if I'm worried there is a bug on it.

7
Haxxzor1•

Valid point. If that bug just so happens to be a spider? All bets are off, am dead.

3
G___Moneyy•

The thing registers caught or not on the first buzz. If you are too far away before you even press the button, it never actually throws the ball.

If you are within the range is 50/50 on the first of 3 buzzes. The other 2 are just for... fun?

2
nelago•

Yeah, I had to turn the Pokémon notifications off for mine. Wasn’t actually catching anything at that speed and so just wasting the battery (along with being irritating)

I'm still constantly getting the disappearing bug, normally 5x an hour with LTE service and nothing running in the background with a galaxy s9+. Also moving faster than 15mph there's no spawns, I think you found a glitch and don't get too loud about or they'll fix it
