How does everyone feel about OLD doctors returning?

Discussion

I don’t just mean past Doctors, I mean the ones who are getting on a bit in life. Say what you will but David Tennant didn’t really look like S4 Ten during Day Of The Doctor.

Eccleston certainly can’t pass for his S1 days.

Personally I don’t have much of an issue with it, at all, I’d rather just see 9, 10, 11 and 12 again :D

What about 4-7? (8 looks the same let’s be real)

10 didn't look like 10 mainly because they got the hair wrong.

He was also marginally less skinny which actually made a difference

They did the best they could with Tennant's hair. Broadchurch required him to have much shorter hair than he did during his run as the Doctor.

Bald people have more hairs that stick up than David did in Day of The Doctor.

You mean this can’t be roughed up bit into this?

This promotional photo shows clearly to me someone got half a tub of gel and just swooped down.

I’m speaking as someone who really doesn’t care about it but I can fully see where people are coming from. This doesn’t look like any less hair than he had in Series 3/4/specials so I can’t see the problem personally that it couldn’t be spiked up at all, unless the cut just didn’t work at all with that style.

i always come back to this but. the muppet show he did this year. he looked more like ten there lol.

I recall him being asked about it afterward in an interview somewhere and he just said they wanted to try something different because it might be the last opportunity to do so..

I know a lot of people assume it happened just before End of Time, but it's possible this was before The Shakespeare Code in S3 which ties in Queen Elizabeth and his hair wasn't sticky-uppy at all in those first two Series.

It’s confirmed in the episode that it’s pre-end of time

As a student of the Hair of the Doctor-ology, I can contest this latter comment. I've basically concluded the Doctor's hair is a separate gallifreyan sub-species operating in a slightly different dimension to the rest of his body, with its own character and subplot.

For Ten, the hair regenerates, slightly stunned. As the Doctor searches for his new costume, his hair perks up a little, eager and keen, but flops down when he reapproaches Rose for Xmas dinner out of sheer nervousness. As his hair realises Rose won't leave him, there are some pick ups filmed of New Earth later in production where it starts getting perked up, then as it gets less nervous about impressing Rose, it starts going full sticky-uppy whacko in Girl in the Fireplace through to the Age of Steel with confidence. After the Doctor heaps gel into it for Idiot's Lantern, it screams for help and receeds back into a casual flop. Once its recovered, it then stands to attention from Fear Her onwards. It's devastated by the loss of Rose for the Runaway Bride, and continues to have a slightly indecisive attitude for 3x01 (it probably still missed Rose). It then jumps up and down through S3 according to the general mood of its host body (the Doctor). I'm not sure it was ever that comfortable around Martha.

"old people like David Tennant"

...

Sad though it is, his run started thirteen years ago and ended nine years ago.

He's also only 47. He's just reached 'middle aged'.

I think it's only right they get an invite. After all, every actor to play The Doctor has always added a flair to the show. Least we can do to say thanks is invite them back for anniversaries and whatnot. Besides, most of the fandom don't care how much they've aged so long as they get to see their beloved Doctor again on-screen.

I have zero issue with it. I don't even care if they don't have an explanation for it. I just want to see Classic Doctors in the show again, played by their original actors.

I'd love to see McCoy return at some point.

It’ll be great if he’s wearing his costume from the movie!

And quick, before it's too late :(

ZuluAlphaNaturist000Tennant•

I'm perfectly fine with it.

someguy1006•

It's fine as long as it isn't pointless fanservice. They can explain the age difference like they did in the Children In Need special with David Tennant and Peter Davison.

I'm on the other side of the spectrum. I'd rather it be pointless like Tom Baker as the Curator. Put Capaldi back in as the father saved from Pompeii.

someguy1006•

I'm not talking about that kind of stuff. I mean stuff like if the Tenth Doctor randomly appeared in a new episode at the very end to save the day and there would be no mention of it in later episodes.

It would make Doctor ex machina an actual thing.

3
ragged-robin•

It's fine. They already explain the age difference in Time Crash with Tennant's Doctor meeting Peter Davison's.

I would love to see some more cross Doctor stories!

The reality of the actors aging beyond their initial appearance is something that we the fans would simply have to ignore.

It was like that with previous multi-Doctor stories. The Five Doctors like Twice Upon a Time had a whole different actor playing the first Doctor. The Two Doctors has Patrick Troughton playing the part with grey hair.

They give a ham fisted explanation in Time Crash as to why there is a change in appearance, but it was mostly grasping as straws, and I think if they tried fitting Colin into something like that it would be a bit much. (Sorry Colin)

They could try some of the CGI replacement tech, but I doubt it will be affordable for TV production for a while.

Either way I just enjoy the Doctor arguing with himself.

CharlestonRowley•

Bring back Collin!

It makes sense. All that traveling around in time, you’re bound to run into yourself now and again.

A great Dr Who episode that features all of the Doctors would be them all arriving at an Olive Garden that only has one reservation left before they close, so they all stand around the Olive Garden arguing about which one of them will go when the time comes to get the table. When the time comes, 9 gets the seat and it turns out that he's sitting back to back with The Master. The Master recognizes some of the other Doctors but they appear to leave so he relaxes a bit, allowing 9 to slip his hand backwards into the Master's jacket to pickpocket his laser screwdriver before chowing down on a plate of spaghetti.

Honestly, I dont mind if it is in a context that is meant to be a bit fanwanky - like Day of the Doctor was or for a holyday-special, were you can just have it be a bit fun without worrying much.

2
junkstuff019OP•

I feel like I didn’t phrase the question well enough- I’m talking about bringing back actors for anniversaries when they are starting to look significantly older than they did when playing the Doctor. I’m not asking if we should bring back actors for random episodes

2
CharlestonRowley•

I don't care If they have to be wheeled in on life support as long as they can read their lines.

2
WimpyKelv12•

I want everyone back, I was a bit bummed about 5-9 being absent for DOTD.

Really them looking older is something you should care that much about. Though it was nice for Time Crash to give a brief explanation. If they’ve gone grey, just dye their hair/give them a wig.

I hope they get more Doctors back for the 60th, but I guess it has to be done well so the story is not overcomplicated.

2
CharlestonRowley•

Bring em all back, I don't care. It's fiction, you can explain it using technobabble. It worked in time crash.

2
YetaxaHartnell•

Paul Mcgann, as great as he does look, does look noticably older.

But that doesn't matter, considering he didn't film his regeneration until 2013, so he doesn't need to look any younger than that

2
junkstuff019OP•

I mean he doesn’t look any older than his final appearance is what I mean
