Is it common to get additional scholarships in year 2?
Hi everyone,
I'm in the process in choosing between the schools I was accepted to. My first choice school accepted me with a ~25% scholarship. The other schools I was accepted to are offering me a full-ride. I don't have a ton of liquid assets and I'm coming from a pretty low-salary job so the financial burden of an MBA (taking out loans, moving, etc.) is stressing me out somewhat.
I'm curious, if I were to accept the lower scholarship offer and attend my first choice, is it common for students in year two to receive more scholarship money? Or is that unlikely?
For reference, my first choice is in the T25-30 range, other schools are T35-T40.
Thanks!

Very unlikely as once you’re in there is no incentive for the schools to give out additional scholarships.
I can't speak for other schools, but at Darden they do give some second year scholarships. If you have to look at it from a purely rational perspective, then there are a number of reasons why schools do this. Here are two:
It incentivizes students to get exceptional grades, engage in activities that strengthen the community, and take risks on entrepreneurial endeavors.
some alumni earmark their contributions for such scholarships.
I'd also say that some schools are just committed to making MBAs more affordable and it's not all about negotiation and incentives.
Yeah, that's what I figured. Thanks!
