The Great Meltening: Please adopt a drain!

Notice

Please, if you are able, adopt a drain and make sure it's clear of debris so we don't drown when all this snow melts away.

Thank you for being a hero!

I made a snowball and threw it directly into a river, so I'd like to think I am doing my part.

kobachi•

Be careful that the river doesn't turn its Jeep around and try to run you over!

This is good. I’ve seen water knee deep during warm ups like today. Shovel your sidewalks too.

Now, if I just had sidewalks or storm drains....

I encourage apartment residents, who haven't been obligated to shovel sidewalks, to pitch in by adopting several drains in their neighborhood. I believe the drain folks were saying to clear 3 ft surrounding the drains and there's a handy online map of drain locations (you don't have to formally adopt them).

...with what? My swiffer? Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think renters who live in apartment buildings tend to have the necessary tools/supplies laying around to get this kind of job done.

...with what? My swiffer?

yes

22
Retractable_Sky•

A Swiffer? Sure, why not. I've used a broom to clear blocked storm drains, or even just a stick if I find a blocked drain while I'm out walking and don't have anything else on hand.

It's not that hard. Really, it's not.

6
Spitinthacoola•

I broke a deck brush clearing snow yesterday. Having the right tools helps.

10
OxidadoGuillermez•

Do you have feet? You don't need "tools/supplies" to kick snow off a drain. This weather has seriously made people insanely helpless.

-7†
d1ckveindyk3•

It says above to clear the 3 ft surrounding a drain.

11
OxidadoGuillermez•

How do you dress yourself?

-14
rollingRook•

I don't mind clearing the drains when wearing my waterproof boots, but a lot of people don't have such footwear. I wouldn't expect someone wearing tennis-shoes to clear a drain with their feet.

Dude you've used your head as a hammer too many times.

tell that to my neighbor who didn't shovel their sidewalk and resulted in my bruised ass

Glad the plows just went by and covered mine up 😑

I just shoveled off a blocked drain. Give me internet points!!!

10
Sessko•

Anyone know if theres like an app or Google map filter with drain locations? Snow is so high along the curbs can't really find any just by looking.

Thanks! Wish it was more a bit more mobile friendly and offered more information on if the manhole is open grate or not... but it's certainly better than nothing.

2

Oh my god if there is that would be amazing.

SDOT has the city covered with the map embedded here. It's pretty accurate near my home.

I don't think we have anything like that available publicly that shows where the drains on state highways are. We wouldn't want people going onto I-5 to clear a drain anyway, that's what our maintenance group is for.

3
jojoman7Shoreline•

Just stepped into a huge drain void off a curb. Watch out for hidden drains! The high snow level combined with the lower level of the drain can lead to multi-foot drops if you step in the wrong place.

3
Trickycoolj•

Definitely going to be interesting to see how the bioswales and natural drainage system handles this in High Point.

2
seariously•

This is also the time when we find all the dog shits that previously went lost in the snow banks.

I'm on top of the two nearest to me... I know my neighbors sure won't.

1
OxidadoGuillermez•

At this point the PSAs are getting kind of histrionic.

Is this actually a problem, or are we just circlejerking now? Water will flow to the lowest level and the drains will melt out early. Storm drains on my block were already peeking through.

If they are covered with debris (unlikely - they don't generally even get that bad after a windstorm) then city crews will spot the problem and fix it, you're not going to have a 3 foot deep lake of water.

-12†
Rule556•

Well... It does often become a problem in many neighborhoods, so it’s not like it’s an unfounded fear.

Just keep an eye out and clear any blocked ones that come your way. It’s not hard.

In Kent area the plows pushed the snow over them. The gutters aren’t working properly and there are large puddles across most of the roads. While roads are fine where you are, it’s still been snowing up north and hasn’t quit raining down here. Conditions are different all over.

13
OxidadoGuillermez•

and there are large puddles across most of the roads.

obvious exaggeration is obvious

A person with this disorder might also:

  • Be uncomfortable unless he or she is the center of attention
  • Dress provocatively and/or exhibit inappropriately seductive or flirtatious behavior
  • Shift emotions rapidly
  • Act very dramatically, as though performing before an audience, with exaggerated emotions and expressions, yet appears to lack sincerity
  • Be overly concerned with physical appearance
  • Constantly seek reassurance or approval
  • Be gullible and easily influenced by others
  • Be excessively sensitive to criticism or disapproval
  • Have a low tolerance for frustration and be easily bored by routine, often beginning projects without finishing them or skipping from one event to another
  • Not think before acting
  • Make rash decisions
  • Be self-centered and rarely show concern for others
  • Have difficulty maintaining relationships, often seeming fake or shallow in their dealings with others
  • Threaten or attempt suicide to get attention
8
OxidadoGuillermez•

That's the disorder. The word also has a non-clinical definition.

15
harlottesometimes•

Does the cure for the non-clinical form of histrionics involve imprisoning Victorian women in sanitariums?

No, it involves stopping being a ninny.

just having a clear top does not make a functioning drain. you gotta clear the compacted crap around it. last night, i walked past three capitol hill intersections with curb-hugging puddles that were 3+ feet wide. the one next to my house was deeper than the tops of my hiking boots.

6
OxidadoGuillermez•

curb-hugging puddles that were 3+ feet wide

oh the humanity

-12
s3r•

those puddles can hide debris or potholes that can cause injury to people walking or biking. and then imagine being a disabled person trying to get around. just because it doesn't bother you doesn't mean it isn't an issue. it's an easy thing to help out with, so why not be neighborly?

10
OxidadoGuillermez•

There's literally 6" of snow and slush all over the place. Listen to yourself.
