Please stop: I've been playing Destiny since D1 alpha/beta....

> I've been playing Destiny since D1 alpha/beta....

why does every post have to start with this phrase these days? there's an awful lot of people that claim to have played the d1 beta/alpha. if that's the case then that pretty much means you're just like everyone else and you're not that special. so stop with this "i played since d1 beta so my opinion matters more" nonsense because i can assure you that no one cares. reading that phrase does the exact opposite than what the poster wants it to do. instead of thinking "oh wow this person must know what they're talking about" all i can think is "here we go again. another 'beta' player that thinks we should just value their opinion more than anyone else's because they've supposedly been playing longer than me." it literally adds nothing constructive to the post so i would recommend just leaving it out.

EDIT: Let me add a little more insight to this to cover some of the points brought up below. I am not trying to discredit a veteran player's opinion. Anyone that has been playing since the beginning can offer some great opinions. With that said, there is no way to validate that someone has played during beta or alpha. Anyone at all can claim that statement. Therefore it has no strength behind it. It means nothing.

There is always a way to show you've played a long time without stroking your own ego. You can bring up relevant stuff from the beta or early D1 to help support your views and opinions. As long as your posts is well thought out then there will always be value in it. You don't need to add a meaningless qualification with no backing.

Lastly, I am in no way, shape or form jealous. I also played during d1 beta. That's a lie but nothing stopped me from typing that. Hopefully you see my point now.

Maybe you should value the opinions of those who have played the game the longest a little higher than others. I'm seeing a lot of "anti-elitism" in this thread that seems to come from an emotional place, not a logical one.

I'm not saying the people who played the longest are right about things, but their opinions come from a different perspective than newer players and that can be valuable. They're writing one sentence at the beginning of a post to let you know where their perspective comes from, and you're having an emotional reaction that stops you from being able to participate in the discussion properly.

It seems like the problem is you.

You see the same thing on the other side of the spectrum too, "New player here, ____" It's to give you an idea of the context within which their perspective was formed. I highly doubt you'd be complaining about those posts because there's no reason to get emotionally hurt about them, unlike being reminded that some have played longer than you have.

37
Rockcity79•

Yep, the original post sounded a bit jealous to me.

16
Jupiter67•

It sounded to me like it was one of those things you just think about, and then quickly forget. Not the sort of thing you run to the Internet to post.

1
LessThanZero86OP:D: Drifter's Crew•

I'm not jealous at all. I played D1 within the first couple of weeks of release. I am by no means jealous of an alpha/beta player. Why would I care that someone played before the game even shipped? That's my exact point. I just don't care. Since the person above said the word not me, all it does is say "hey I'm elite since I played during beta." There are always ways of offering your opinion without the need to say you played since beta. That piece of info adds nothing of value.

-6
LucentBeam8MP•

Playing the first few weeks is exactly the same as playing it before launch. All we did was play the same exact thing slightly earlier.

Calling yourself a launch player and a beta/alpha player carries the same basic experience.

You see how you posted:

I played D1 within the first couple of weeks of release.

and it was just a non-emotional comment about when you started playing? If I post "I played the Alpha" then it's exactly the same: a non-emotional fact of when I started playing. I think you're projecting a lot more onto that than you need to be.

6
Rockcity79•

It seems like you care enough about it to then put a post on Reddit 4 years after the beta.

3
samstownstranger•

Maybe if you need to preface your point/argument with this chest puffing to prop it up you just don't have a good enough point/argument especially when a lot of these posts end up having nothing to do with D1.

3
10GuyIsDrunk•

with this chest puffing to prop it up

That's your interpretation of it and it's apparently needlessly tainting your entire perception of these posts. The amount of people who are actually saying this sort of thing in a boastful manner amounts to a drop in the bucket of those saying it for the sake of clarity and informed discussion. I don't know how you came to have such a feeble way of interpreting the benign sentences of others, but I cannot begin to imagine how this warped outlook must be affecting you in the rest of your life.

1
samstownstranger•

It's affecting my life in no way at all, as pseudo-intelectual ramblings, such as yours, on the internet have no effect on me.

1
10GuyIsDrunk•

pseudo-intelectual ramblings

Jesus christ my dude, my comment was perfectly clear and comprehensible. I'll break it down for you:

When you hear and read what other people say, you are sometimes reading and hearing it wrong because of how you see yourself and the world around you. You think they are acting big and mean or trying to sound smart, and you think that because you feel small and sad and afraid that you're not smart enough and you feel alone in that, like you're the only one who has those feelings. The truth is, you're not alone in those feelings, they're shared by everyone around that world, at least occasionally, and when you fully realize this you'll stop feeling so attacked all the time by boring straight up harmless sentences people say.

When your neighbor says, "I didn't actually like Star Wars because X, Y, and Z" and maybe a couple of those reasons sound complex or wrong, they're not attacking you, they're not being "pseudo-intellectual", they're not trying to seem better than you, they just didn't like the franchise for the reasons they listed.

When people mention how long they've been playing Destiny, it's extremely rarely a flex, it's intended to be a helpful note for others to better understand them and their perspective.

2

Like I said all opinions are valuable but using "I'm a beta player" and thinking that automatically qualifies your opinion as more valuable is ridiculous. All it becomes is dick measuring contest and an ego stroke. Leave it in your pants and just give me your opinion. If it's well thought out then I'll read it and find value in it. If it's whiny and complaining then I'll probably stop reading it as well. And yes you're right the new player posts would be a problem too but I see far less of those. Most of the new player posts I see are asking for help. All the whiny posts are a problem in general.

All I'm saying is you can still have a valuable, well constructed posts without a big ego tied to it. That phrase qualifies nothing.

1†
Jupiter67•

Like I said all opinions are valuable but using "I'm a beta player" and thinking that automatically qualifies your opinion as more valuable is ridiculous.

It is not ridiculous. It's important. It shows you have critical perspective. You've directly experienced where the game was in its development, and that holds far more weight, in terms of reason and logic, than just showing up last Tuesday after you got D2 on sale and posting another pointless, uninformed, idiotic "My review of Destiny 2" thead. This entire crusade you've launched is anti-intellectualism at best. What happened in the last few days that precipitated this? Please don't be this person.

The point is that you think they're stupid things/concepts/ideas, but you might think they're stupid because your perspective is that of someone that has been "playing for 3 months" whereas to people who have played through the various metas over the years might not. Thank you for proving my point that this sort of context can be helpful.

-13
10GuyIsDrunk•

You can be as over the top and rediculous as you want to be, putting words in other peoples mouth as you tantrum about the internet, but it doesn't change the value of understanding others perspectives and the context in which they are formed. A player who started with Forsaken sees Destiny as an entirely different game from a player who started with TTK and they see Destiny as an entirely different game from a player who started at launch or alpha. Each of those three players look at current day destiny and see it in a different light. Having any understanding of the kind of light the person you're talking to sees what you're talking about is helpful, which is why it's helpful for them to tell you when they started playing in Destiny's case.

11
ramblin_billy•

What you might not understand is that someone who has been playing that long has seen most of the current concerns before. And a lot of attempted fixes that just didn't work out the way people expected. Their ideas aren't necessarily any better, but they probably have a better perspective on how the game has developed. They also have a better idea of what to expect from Bungie. Over time Bungie has explained a lot about the various limitations of their code and some of the philosophy behind their game design. Some things they can't do and some things they won't do. For instance, if you weren't around for D1 pvp, you're probably never going to understand the deep divisions that came out of the SBMM conversation. You're not going to get "nerf fusion rifles" and "Titan master race". And you probably don't know who Randall is. By invoking a sense of shared experience, for a lot of us, some things don't need to be said.

0
Andreiyutzzzz:AC: Team Cat (Cozmo23) // Cats are cool•

Randall the vandal and hank the shank? Read about it. Same for fusion rifles to a degree. They can tell their opinion all they want but they dont need to express how they played "since D1 Alpha" everytime. Give us your opinion and thats it

You just illustrated why there is no substitute for experience. Or paying attention. Hint: fusion rifle is not the important part of that phrase. The sad truth in this world is that not all opinions have equal value.

It does add something to the post though. It's a qualifier to set the reader up to understand where the opinion comes from and under what context their opinion is formed. Same thing when a new player asks a question and starts their post with "new player here!" Or, in a equally relevant (If extreme) example, when you see a book is written by someone with a PHD. This this isn't written to peacock, it's there to either lend credit to or explain the viewpoint of the author.

LessThanZero86OP:D: Drifter's Crew•

But anyone can play since beta. That doesn't mean they have a deep understanding of the game. There is also no way to check the validity of that statement. Anybody can start a post with that. I never played during beta but what's stopping me from putting that in my post? The internet is full of dishonest people so why should I trust that they actually played since beta? A PHD is from an accredited university so you know for a fact that they have the knowledge to speak in depth about the subject. Even if there was a way to validate, there are so many people on here that claim to have played way back then that it dilutes the qualification.

A well, thought out post can touch on the fact that they are a veteran player without claiming they played during beta. Bring elements that are relevant from that period into your posts to help support your opinion and if you can't do that then once again being a beta player has no relevance to the post.

-1†
irgr3at•

Also you can check their profile online for the emblem for playing in the beta. Assuming you know their gamertag, PSN name.

6
adaenisVoidwalker•

Because there are ways to check (beta emblems, for instance), so if you don't believe someone, you can always look it up or ask for proof.

That being said? There are implications to be said with the "played since d1 alpha/beta." It means the person is a dedicated fan, as that was over four years ago. It means they likely have a intimate knowledge of the geme. It means criticism is likely coming from a good place, and that ideas put forward, even if you disagree with them, are put forward in good faith, with the hope of improving the game. You can't get that kind of information from a shorter post, so the phrase "played since d1 alpha/beta" summarizes it rather nicely.

I don't know if you mean it, but you seem salty that other people could possibly have played longer than you. If so, even if you don't admit it, chill out. We're all fans of the same game, regardless of how long we've played. Don't get mad because you're reminded that someone has played longer than you have. It's not written to peacock, it's there describe the experience of the author.

6
LessThanZero86OP:D: Drifter's Crew•

I'm not salty that someone played beta. I couldn't care less, hence my point. Being in the beta versus starting the week of release versus playing D1 y3 literally means nothing. Also just cause you played during beta doesn't mean you've played consistently. They could've played part of y1 d1 and then came back in y2 of D2. No one is gonna go through checking people's credentials for every post. It's not worth the time and effort. People are either just gunna blindly trust it or they are just gonna ignore it. Anyone that has spent time on the internet should know that it's filled with liars so you shouldn't trust anything someone says. People just need to stop saying it like it adds anything constructive. You can have all the things you said in a post without the need to say you've played since beta.

It means the person is a dedicated fan, as that was over four years ago. It means they likely have an intimate knowledge of the geme. It means criticism is likely coming from a good place, and that ideas put forward, even if you disagree with them, are put forward in good faith, with the hope of improving the game.

Just because someone hasnt played since beta doesn't mean all those things can be contained in the post. You could've stayed playing in y3 D1 and you could still have all those sentiments in your posts. I don't see why that's hard to understand. Any well thought out post will be someone that has intimate knowledge of the game and put forth in good faith with hope of improving the game. If you have those things then you're probably a pretty dedicated fan. If those things aren't contained within your post them you did a poor job at putting your ideas together. That's just how I feel.

2
Jupiter67•

There is also no way to check the validity of that statement.

Being a beta player doesn't make you knowledgeable about the game. You can't just throw around terms to try and sound smart. Just cause you drive a car for 30 years doesn't mean you're a good, knowledgeable driver. Anyone that invests a lot of their time, cares about the game and has done their research will be knowledgeable. That could be someone that started in beta, y3 or last month.

1
Jupiter67•

Experience makes you knowledgeable. If experience to you means I'm just trying to "sound smart" then it's up to you to prove I am not. Because right now, you're basically saying anyone who says they've played the alpha/beta as a way to show their experience knows nothing because how do they prove they played the alpha/beta. And that's pretty stupud. And it's a total disregard for reason and logic. Experience bestows knowledge, and more importantly, it bestows critical perspective. It means having experienced a prior state of the game, you are better able to articulate your discussions of its current state. And that matters, and it is important whether or not you think it's important or not. To anyone who knows how to think critically, the position you are taking here is ludicrous. It's a complete disregard for intellect, and the knowledge that direct experience bestows.

4
LessThanZero86OP:D: Drifter's Crew•

You kinda cherrypicked a topic but I'll bite. You could always just say "they already tried ohk knives in beta and it turned out to not be a good idea because people would get hit from extreme ranges and there was nothing you could do to counter them." Or whatever other reason there was for it being bad. You don't need to say "I've been playing since beta so I know it's a bad idea so stop suggesting it."

Specific topics like that aren't really even the problem posts. It's the ones that talk about the overall state of the game. There's a clear sense of "I've been playing longer than you so I know better" attitude. Depending on how your present your response to the topic you brought up, it may not come off that way.

You know, this reminds me of how Blizzard reminds players of what good feedback is. I'm not disagreeing with you- but the difference between...

"I've been playing since the D1 Beta and OHK throwing knives are bad."

And...

"I've been playing since the D1 Beta and OHK throwing knives were bad because you could get killed from across the map and there was no way to counter them."

Is simply that the latter is better feedback. It provides information beyond the result that gives valuable context for the result. In many ways, I feel that sort of context should be the gold standard for feedback. Math, if applicable, and the reasons WHY something needs buffed or debuffed (or outright nerfed).

I too enjoy getting any post where I criticise the tedious grindiness and inaccessibility of the current state of the game descended on by guys with a fifth of my play time in Destiny sagely informing me that I need to “git gud filthy casual, It’s The Best It Ever Has Been™”

1
crocfiles15•

I find nothing about the game tedious, and it’s very accessible to everyone. It’s the extreme exaggerations that are killing the conversation. D2 right now IS the best that destiny has ever been. You don’t have to “git gud” to see that. You just have to stop and actually think about what you’re saying. No one forces anyone to grind for purely cosmetic items, like the titles and the RNG cosmetics that lead to them. That’s one of the things that makes the state of the game better. The fact that there are things for super hardcore players to grind for, and it’s stuff that can keep those players busy for a long time. Exotics are rare, but if you just do the simple weekly powerful drops every week, you will get them all eventually. I can’t think of any thing else that you could possibly be referring to, because everything else is accessible to everyone. Some items take a certain level of skill to get, others are just a time investment.

-1
dbenway•

That’s a valid opinion, but my personal view is that the current state of the game is the absolute worst it’s been since I bought D1. This is due primarily to the changes to basic progression, the LL grind is imho now completely soul destroying, overly greedy for my time with very little reward, and funnels me towards certain limited activities rather than letting me play how I like. It would be fine by me if a protracted grind was my own choice - I’ve done plenty of grindy quests/challenges/events in the past - but in reality every aspect of the experience has now been infected. Before Forsaken I’d drifted away a couple of times before due to lack of content, but I’d never gotten burned out to the point that I actively decided to quit playing. YMMV.

This is like I say having been a daily player for years - it feels necessary to point this out because I’ve regularly had people queuing up to tell me that my opinion doesn’t count because Filthy Casual, when in reality I’ve been with the game longer and have logged exponentially more hours than most of them.
