Premember Spell, v2

5e Workshop

2nd attempt after useful tips from the first attempt

----

Premember Spell

3rd Level Divination

Casting Time: 10 Minutes [R]

Range: Self

Components: V, S, a diamond worth 1,000gp, which the spell consumes

Duration: Instantaneous

You add any Wizard spell of Level 1 or higher that is not Wish to your spellbook. If you would add a spell that you currently do not have a spell slot for, make an arcana check where the DC is 12 + that spell’s level. On a success, you add that spell to your spellbook. On a failure, you take Xd12 psychic damage where X is the level of that spell and you do not add it to your spellbook.

When you add a spell to you spellbook this way, make a note of it being Premembered. The next time you would add a spell of that level to your spellbook via leveling up, you must learn one those spells, or take Xd12 psychic damage, where X is the level of that spell. That spell remains on your list of spells to learn and will cause the damage again if you do not learn it at your next opportunity. Adding a spellscroll of that spell to your book constitutes learning the spell.

If you would die while you still have spells you have not premembered, all those spells are cast simultaneously upon your death with random targets within range as though you were the caster as the temporal paradox attempts to reconcile.

----

Main Changes:

This version no longer allows the spell to be cast, but simply adds the spell to your spellbook; the spell caster must have the appropriate spell slots available to them to cast the spell.

Higher level spells can be learned with a skill check and possible penalty for the attempt, but can't be cast until the appropriate spell slots are available.

To reduce overuse of this spell, the Components are consumed, the spell automatically penalizes the player for casting it more than twice per Level Up, the casting time was expanded to make in-combat casting impractical

Cantrips cannot be learned this way

IDK. I guess what is the point of using that spell if all it does is allow you just write down a spell in your spell book? It only costs 50 gp per level, as I recall, to just copy a spell into your spell book. And plus the spells you gain when leveling up are put in the spell book for free.

This just seems like a method of suicide for a wizard.

Fair enough; I guess the idea with this version is that you get to pick and choose extra spells, rather than wait for the DM to drop spell scrolls of their choosing into your hands.

The original concept cast the spell in addition to adding it to the spellbook, but didn’t limit the level and that was complicated and poorly balanced.

I guess I’m looking for the utility of “cast a spell you need for the situation, but haven’t learned yet” with the flavor of “borrow the information from the future”
