Gotta love the guy asking dispatch to sign him on and giving his squad and star number over the air while his coworkers have just arrived to an active shooter...

I work in a dispatch center downstate (countywide psap) Something of this magnitude I can’t even imagine. I just hope they eventually got everyone on the statewide channel to be able to talk to each other. Plus these days a lot of departments are on different digital networks that don’t always talk to each other and the statewide channel is VHF and not everyone has that programmed on their portables.

We Recently had a traffic pursuit terminate in our county it was stemming from home invasion, stolen vehicle, robbery, all that good stuff. It all started a few counties away. We had 3 different county sheriff offices there, state police, a village police department, and a few full time city departments involved.

It went about as well as expected. All of the agencies from our county have interoperability and everyone went to the same channel. But for the other agencies it was a little sketchy: we can monitor some of our neighboring counties but we can’t transmit. So we were playing a game of telephone: someone was listening to their coms someone else was on the phone with their dispatch and we were all talking to each other in our dispatch room and our dispatcher was relaying info to our guys and gals on the street. Once things slowed down we were able to move everyone to a statewide channel.

We managed to catch the bad guy and all the good guys went home to their families.

If it’s a big enough incident where you have time to mobilize an organized response and if you’re in the great state of IL (judging from your user name) you can use ILEAS and even MABAS (the hose dragger mutual aid system) to get you an ITECS trailer or other resources and get everyone on the same channel, or following ICS: get your sectors on the same channels and funneling all of that up to the command post.

Those lazy firemen have a lot of cool resources that they will happily* share with you

*state mandated to share with you
