The only thing I didn't quite like about S3: Daniel Sackheim directing.

I disagree with most posts complaining about the exposition or not enough gore and murder but I try to explain myself elsewhere. I did, however, have a certain issue with the season, too.

With the possible exception of the third episode, I felt like Daniel Sackheim's episodes lacked that certain magic that Cary Joji Fukunaga, Jeremy Saulnier, and even Nic Pizzolatto himself brought to the series.

It's weird because fragments of what he has done were amazing. And I do respect the man and his work on many, many great TV series. However, I feel like at times the last few episodes lacked the ethereal, almost oneiric quality we've tasted before. Like what's he's done was more the work of a great craftsman rather than an artist. There were moments where I felt I am watching an NBC/Fox weekly, rather than the true True Detective.

The music, so praised on the sub, is a good example, too. I didn't like it, it was drawing attention to itself and thus was distracting -- never a good thing in my book. But I don't quite blame the composer, I rather think that the imagery and direction, despite the actors' best effort, wasn't gripping enough for me to miss it and be fully immersed in the experience.

There, off my chest.

I agree, it looked like a fairly run of the mill crime show direction wise and that was an issue with this season in particular.

I will say, I liked the music most of the time (especially since I think like 3/4ths of it was reused from S1 and 2?) but my issue was that there were often times the music in a scene was completely clashing with the tone whatever was actually happening.
