The genre is not my preference either, but I have to say I enjoyed my time with it. I watched 1 episode of the anime and went to the manga. I think I finished around 200 chapters before the second episode aired.
I do recommend this, but only the manga. It's nice to see things in motion but the adaptation has many problems. The pacing and tone of the scenes make the story seem more melodramatic than it really is, the music used is just not consistent and poorly chosen. On top of the scenes taking more time than they should the amount of content skipped is abysmal. There is no second season announcement yet.
So yeah, I don't recommend the anime. But the manga is very good. You never feel like a plot point is dragging too much, things are brought up, and resolved, there are consequences to things. Characters grow both in age and development. This is not a highschool anime. They eventually leave school and find jobs or start college. You can clearly see their evolution. New characters are introduced constantly but not in a jarring way.
I don't know your opinion on manga, but if your are not bothered by it I'd suggest you go to that version of the story from the get go.

Yeah, I'm 28 so I grew up watching DBZ, Evangelion, Slum Dunk and the like, so I get what you're saying.
Vinland Saga is my favourite manga at the moment. Domekano if one of the exceptions because it's not in a genre a particularly like or have read much, but it hooked me.

That was a lot better than I thought it was gonna be. This is not an easy song.
