Tip: You can run Rimworld in borderless fullscreen mode

Misc

In text form:

  1. Right-click Rimworld in Steam and at the bottom of the menu click Properties.
  2. Click the button labeled "Set Launch Options..."
  3. Add the line
    -popupwindow
    to the Launch Options
  4. Click Okay
  5. ProfitLaunch Rimworld

If you were already running Rimworld fullscreened, you'll need to un-check that option and possibly re-launch to get the setting to take. Tada. You can now move your mouse to other screens or just alt+tab around without losing your goddamned mind because of the performance hiccups just because you want to take notes on what you're doing.

Bonus effect: the Snipping Tool is wayyy more effective and works perfectly. (Unless you're trying to capture hover/popup text)

weird, my game has never been screen locked. does this change keep the game up when you click off?

Yes. My annoyance was that I couldn't click off or alt+tab Rimworld without minimizing it, as I'm sure you've experienced for nearly every fullscreen game.

I don't know if Rimworld traps the pointer to the game window by default in fullscreen mode, but by having it run borderless fullscreen, you can play like fullscreen, but be able to mouse off the game window without it minimizing.

You can also just turn off Fullscreen in the game options. You can click offscreen just fine then.

Yes, but I don't want a border, that's not how I want to play. With thousands of mods for Rimworld to make the game behave exactly how I want to play, why should I not also make the interface exactly how I want too?

Also, I made this post not only for players right now, but for future players who buy or come back to the game months and years from now. Who are wanting what I did, googling most of my post title, and now I've laid out step by step instructions to make it easy.

As one of those people, thanks!

Is there a way to do the same thing with the shortcut on my desktop?

D'oh, I had completely forgotten not everyone has the Steam version!

Yes, yes you can. You just need to open the Properties window for your shortcut, and add the "-popupwindow" string to the end of the Target filepath. Like so: https://i.imgur.com/Txqyk8p.png

Tested and works. Do note the space between the .exe and the passed argument -popupwindow is required.

Thank you very much!

Dunno how this doesn't have more upvotes, unless it's common knowledge and I'm a dumdum. Thank you though!
