Rule 7 application on r/MagicArena

Information

Part 8. Rule 7. One rule to rule them all.

Just a bit left. Application of Rule 7 is important and the bans from it are in the top-3 from all the rule roster.

If a user has a history of baseless negative comments and submissions, their post may be removed. This is different from Rule 1 or Rule 4 application which applies to the first offence.

The multiplier for repeated offences isexponential. When we encounter multiple offences from the same user we won’t wait around and slowly add 3 days temp ban, then 3 days again followed by another 3 day ban.

We believe the users of r/MagicArena are mature enough to take some responsibility for their actions. Let’s have a look at some application examples:

Example 1:

User posts: “Shuffler is rigged” once and is reported for rule 4

Mod action: Warning that this falls under rule 4 and is deleted for this reason

User post in the modmail: “Don’t tell me what to do - f****, ******, *****”

Mod action: permaban

We won’t tolerate such behaviour. We have clear rules and this database of precedents. We apply rules in a transparent manner and have better things to do then argue with users who have this attitude. Such behaviour shows us clearly that this person is not fit to have a productive conversation and doesn’t deserve to be a part of this subreddit.

Example 2:

User posts to another user: “you’re a *****” once and is reported for rule 1

Mod action: Temp banned for 3/7/14 days

User post in the modmail: “ok, understood”

User posts again after the temp ban to another user: “you know what? You’re a *******”

Mod action: permaban

If you had been warned and you repeat the offence, depending on the context and the situation you might get an extended ban period or get permabanned. We keep records and logs of bans and warning for each user and automatically share it across the mod team. This is a part of the reason why it’s pointless to think you might slip away from responsibility, that we will forget or reverse your ban if it really was your fault. Loxodons Moderators never forget!

Example 3:

User posts: “toxic comment”

User posts: “toxic comment”
Mod action: warn about constant toxicity
User in the modmail: “yeah, whatever, do your worst”
User posts: “toxic comment”
User posts: “toxic comment”
Mod action: shadowban/permaban

Magic Arena is a gaming subreddit of a game you supposedly enjoy. We’re 100% fine with criticism of the game. We even like it when you back your opinion with data, suggestions and humor.

But statements like “this game plain sucks” x100 times without justification won't fly. How are others supposed to react to those posts if you don’t specify what exactly is your problem with it? How are other supposed to react if you’re constantly toxic to other users calling them noobs or other unsavory names constantly?

This is where moderators step in an apply a temp/perma/shadowban. This doesn’t happen often but as we’re a popular subreddit we have had a number of those cases.

On to the latest rule, Rule 8 in the next post!

Thanks for taking the time to explain the application of all the rules in detail. I really appreciate it.

I suggest you to place links to these threads in the subreddit rules page so they become more visible. These information is too valuable to be lost among the old threads.

Thanks. The plan all along was to do that once the series is finished.

There was some good good feedback in the posts to refine wording so I'm glad that everyone was able to participate in the discussion!

We shall see which form we'd want the text to take, it's around 20 pages so it may be the post chain, Reddit wiki entry or even on a google sites where the beginners guide is.
