Draft pick trading

Hi all. I run a 10- team standard league (1 keeper). I'm looking to encourage the players to trade picks but am wondering if anyone has some do's and dont's before we lock it in. The main problem I foresee is if someone left the league after trading but I've suggested there be a penalty equal to the league fee to discourage that.

Any help much appreciated!

I've seen a few leagues where they have rules where if you trade a future 1st round pick, you must then pay your league fee for that season. That way, if they trade their pick and bolt, the new owner doesn't get a 1st round pick, but he also has his league fee paid for.

Yeah makes sense. That way they still get something. Love it

I instituted a 2 keeper (round drafted -2 each year) which keeps you from keeping round 1 and 2. We also prohibit trading draft picks 1 and 2. Basically rounds 1-2 are always yours and can never be traded or used as a keeper slot. We also have draft pick trade deadline of first kick off of week 7, that keeps tanking for picks to a minimum. Draft pick trading must be matched in total # of picks per team, we have 17 slots and no team will have more or less than 17 picks each year.

I spent a couple years digging into keepers/draft pick trading and meshed a bunch of the rules to make what is the outline for our 10 team, 2QB, .5ppr league.

Yeah our league is definitely building a mesh of rules. Currently 1 keeper with -1 round year one then -3 then -5 year 3. Free agents kept are in Rd 8. So far nobody has kept someone in the first 2 rounds but I don't think I'll discourage it just yet. If a team wanted to keep Gurley rd1 then they're disadvantaged by not taking advantage for a better keeper (perhaps not better player) later in the draft.

Definitely agree tho the amount of total picks in the draft can't change

What ive done is make player pay for the year in advance to unlock draft pick trades. This way even if they back out of the next season you still have the money for whoever were to take over that team and that team would get a free pass for their first year. if the team doesnt pay for the year in advance they are not able to trade picks.

Something else to consider is not allowing off season draft pick trading. What happened with my league was teams would trade all their draft picks for the best players, then try to trade those players for picks back in the off season.

Trading draft picks is a great way to add a different aspect to the league

This is the 3rd year we are doing it, Havent had anyone trade 1st or 2nd yet but we had problems this year with all but 4-5 teams tanking earlier than before. It brought multiple complaints from other owners and we are changing from in-season pick trades to not being able to trade picks until the offseason. We are currently a 12 team 3 keeper (in drafted rnd) league.
