I think the difference between this and W&P is that many of the principal characters were involved in the wars in Tolstoy. So while the digression did sometimes go on (and on) it wasn't a total departure from the narrative. You know that this character or that was being affected by the action, even when the action was on a larger scale. I'd have to go back and look, but I remember Tolstoy's war rambles being largely philosophical, more reflection on the machine of war and how people act when caught up in it. There seems to be more talk of actual maneuvers and strategy in Hugo.

Which is exactly your translation, so I'm confused too.

Hm. My final line is "Unhappy man, thou wert reserved for French bullets!" 
Is that a translation issue, or am I somehow on the wrong chapter? I had the correct last line for the last chapter.

Otherwise I have to say, I just really don't care either. Hugo is making the battle sound super valorous and I can kinda appreciate his craft in doing so... but really it's just a bunch of people dying. I'm glad I didn't read War and Peace, I don't know if I would have been cut out for it.
