A 5 minute battle/slaughter and the Umber boy being trapped in that room would have put this episode up there as one of the best opening episodes. All the summary and reunions make sense but give us some fighting.

That would've ruined the later scene, which in my opinion was the best scene in the episode. If we knew what they would find before they found it all the suspence would've been lost.
But what was the significance of the symbol? That seems more important.
We've seen this symbol several times already. It's the shape of the forest from when the children made the knight king.

I think its just the night kings sigil, which he'll use to mark where he has taken in his conquest.
I am leaning towards this too. It's like he's advancing and marking his territory, at least in the show. Might have larger significance in the books.

They were never meant to battle them there so probably weren’t prepared and caught unaware when trying to leave. It was probably more of a slaughter! Fuck me though, shit my pants when he started screaming
The fighting will come. Plus it wasn't meant to be an epic battle scene, they wanted that chilling horror esque vibe of going through a darkened blood stained castle. The coming episodes will be packed with action.

You don't drop an exciting fight every episode, lest the later episodes lose their excitement. You can't blow your load that early, that'd be bad writing
