Experiencing the same problem. Will get back if I find a fix.
Edit: Got it. It's a new flag, which means currently it can be changed, but some sofware dev at google will decide it's the new normal in a few months and will make it permanent.
Here's how to fix it (for now)
go to the url Chrome://flags
find 'Hardware Media Key Handling'
Disable
This worked for me as well. I have to say what a strange change, the fact that I couldn't even get it to work with any media player anymore because chrome had taken control is really frustrating
I swear if they ever make it permanent and unable to be disabled, I'm switching browsers. I like being able to hit a button on my mouse to pause my music so I can hear a Youtube video or my friends on Discord.
Sweet, thanks, its working now!
Omg it worked thank you soooooo much
Thank you! They had better not make this permanent. I'll have to switch if they do.
Bless you, i've been looking for a fix for this for the past hour or so and could only find the media player thing and now chrome now supports media keys but not how to turn it off.
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks a lot man! Hope they don't force it on us like the theme thing
thank you very much! It pissed me off. If it can't be disabled in the future I might change the default browser.
Thank you, I find this on google and it worked
Thank fucking god! You are the man. This shit was driving me bat shit insane.
This worked for me, big thanks!
You have given me breath again my friend, I gasm'd at the reclamation of control AGEHAO
Gracias me amigo! You saved my day, haha!
Thanks this worked, I would love this to work by using the currently focused screen instead of being global.
FYI: If this doesn't work right away for you, you may need to restart Spotify (or whatever media player you're using) or close out of anything else that your system recognises as a media player.
There are two ways to force Spotify to close. If you like keyboard shortcuts, press Ctrl+Shift+Q when Spotify has focus, or access the menu by clicking the "3 horizontal dots" in the upper right corner, goto "File, and then select "Exit".
Just setting the Flag to Disabled didn't do the trick for me. I think what may have been going on is that Windows was "stuck" in a "multiple media players" configuration, wherein it will only allow media keys to work within the active window. Closing out of anything that can play media might be necessary for you, too. In other words, Chrome might not be the only culprit.
If you're unsure of what else might be considered a media player, in Windows, try looking in the "Volume Mixer". Anything that can play sound will be listed in there. You'll find a shortcut to the Volume Mixer in the context (read: right-click) menu of the Speaker icon in the System Tray.

Dude. I fucking love you! I don't know why I couldn't find this thread a couple weeks ago, but I had actually switched to firefox because of this issue.

Thanks really helpful. I hope they don't make it permanent.

Thanks a lot :)
THANK YOU
fuck yeah, fixed it. thank you
I dunno if any official Chrome engineers/decision makers ever visit this subreddit but here's my feedback on this if they do: NEVER MAKE IT THE DEFAULT. It's annoying. I don't intend to control chrome when I chrome doesn't even have focus. I don't think anyone does. Time to change browsers if a time comes when it can't be disabled.
Thanks for this. It was driving me crazy.
