Ordered something from Germany and the post office is charging me import VAT is that right?

Ordered a €120,99 (includes €19,32 Tax) item from Germany and just got a charge for £11.76 (£8 of their bullshit charges) so £3.76 charge.

I thought you didn't pay any extra VAT on items from within the EU, and even if you do that's clearly not the 1% difference between Germany and the UK's VAT rates?

Did the price you paid the seller include vat? They have to charge it at the UK rage but you may have been looking at an ex vat price when you bought?

The order email says "Total: €120,99 (includes €19,32 Tax)".

Did you buy from a German firm who have had it shipped to you from outside the Eu maybe?

Would that change the import duties when it came into Britain even after taxes had been paid in Germany?

I think the item came from the US (or maybe china) then they resold.

They won’t have paid the import tax. I’m not an expert but I think it comes down to that plus how the sender labels it. It probably just looks to customs / Royal Mail like a us -> uk import

Wouldnt that mean even more import tax to the UK though? $3.76 on a £100 item is too low, especially after already paying 20 euro tax when buying it.

The value printed on the customs label, if there is one, could be less.

That doesn't sound right. Did the send paid the correct postage?

If the goods are in "free circulation" then you should not need to pay any more specific import duties. However some companies can suspend duties at import using a customs warehouse. Then they can sell them direct to the customer and pay the duties as it leaves the warehouse (saves cashflow issues if nothing else). Its that or the german company is a middle man and the supplier is actually from outside of the EU and sent direct to you. Im not sure if you can ask Royal Mail for the C88 (import document) that will detail the duties you have paid.
