Whos your favorite VPS provider?

Hey guys, I've been self hosting a few apps from a old pc that i turned into a server at my place, only thing is that when I am away from my network, xfinitys upload speed is garbage. Movie streaming on plex can look poopy and all other apps just tend to struggle. Im looking to move all my applications to a VPS that has a really nice upload speed, and preferably also comes with a significant amount of storage space, for a decent price. Who do you guys recommend? Ill probably be doing plex, some time of cloud storage app, and a few gameservers. Thanks for any recommendations!

EDIT: My location is USA, would be perfect if the company provides hosting in Chicago!

With SSD's? Vultr.

For more capacities with older HDD, nfoservers.com (3Ghz+ CPUs) for cheap.

Thanks for the recommendation! I've been looking into nfoservers.com, seem to have really cheap lower tier plans and pretty decent feedback. Whether its SSD/HDD doesnt really bother me that much, currently everything on my home network has been running off a HDD (excluding the os) and its been fine.

I used nfoservers for a while and it wasn’t bad.

I feel like scaleway has better bare metal for similar money and I decided to consolidate so since it had internal networks I moved over to them.

I use Linode, never had a problem with them.

I'll just go for Germany based Hosting, may not apply to you - but you didn't specify your location.

For cheap VPS with rather lot of features (aka space) I like using contabo with decent performance.
If you are searching for more realibity, I can also recommend Hetzner. If not going for physical Hardware (which you can get decent one from "Boerse"), their Cloud-Hosts are great as well. But, Hetzner isn't as cheap. :)

Sorry, yes i'm looking for USA hosts, preferably Chicago. However, as long as the uplink is decent id really be open to anything if it fits my needs, thanks for the information ill be checking them out!

No problem at all!
As both Hosters do not have data centers inside the US, the big thingie with water inside might be crucial for ping and connection times. I think you don't want that :)

I've always liked digitalocean for when I needed something web based in a pinch. Might not be the best around, but I've been a happy customer for years.

Ive been with scaleway and their pricing model is REALLY good, im on the 2gb 2cpu plan and really enjoy it, unlimited bandwidth is a huge plus albeit I dont use more than 10GB i think, at the very least Id check their plans and configurations, they are cheaper than digitalocean and have better configs for the servers, unlimited bandwidth and the support is why i stayed and didnt switch

I’ve been pretty happy with them since I switched. A few random issues with the dashboard or console at certain times of night but it’s so minor it’s not a big deal

Ramnode has the best support team and the "premium" VPS'es have unparalleled CPU performance (unparalleled as in the best, not unparalleled as in single-core :)

As a counterpoint here, I really wanted to like Ramnode, but on multiple occasions my instance just disappeared off the face of the planet (stopped responding to any network requests). When I contacted support, all they could do was ask if I made any recent OS upgrades (I hadn't), and give me a gzip of my data to copy onto a new instance. I mean, their support was responsive, which was nice. I just might've expected a little more reliability or at least letting me know when my VPS instance vanishes due to some hardware issue or whatever it was that happened.

Digital Ocean are cheap, reliable and they have a shiny dashboard

Vultr has been very good for our limited needs.

I've been enjoying Hyper Expert. Prices are competitive. Servers are all SSD or SSD-cached. Support is friendly and responsive. They even have a Discord channel.

Never heard of these guys. Wicked cheap though. Might be a good option.

These guys are really cool. Check out their discord. https://discord.gg/s9tAuZK

Ill definitely be giving these guys a look, seems like great prices, thanks for the recommendation!

Otherwise, forget I said anything.

BuyVM is my to go to provider in the US ... they have servers located in Las Vegas and New York.

Same! Love me some slices

Gah, everytime I look they never have space in their LV datacenter. WTB a couple TB worth of slabs and some vms for backend storage

I really like Linode. Their new panel is quite good and they give you a lot of options in it, including downsizing disks which I know is a problem at some places. They have hosting in New Jersey and Atlanta, which seem to be close enough to Chicago

NA? OVH, WisHosting, HostDoc, BuyVM, VirMach.

Specifically the US? BuyVM, WisHosting, HostDoc, VirMach.

Hetzner lately, but I've been a prgmr customer for years and I have utmost respect for them.

I've used binary lane, vultr, Linode, Azure, AWS, online.net, BlueVM, CloudAtCost and Digital Ocean. I'm now using just CloudAtCost and DO.

Azure has a datacenter in Chicago (US North). You can create a VPN and extend your virtual network there, latency should be minimal. (Disclaimer, i work for Azure)

Upstream bandwidth is expensive on azure and In my experience, I once tried to use azure(the cheapest instance I could find) for a silly college project, That instance was roughly 2.5x the cost of what DO/Vultr charges for their cheapest instance and it had a 10mbps(1.25MBps) upload link, 25gb hdd and IIRC, 10-25gb free upload. How's this configuration practical for literally anything?

Azure functions are cool, I'll give you that but VPS offerings(atleast the configuration I tried), No.

I have talked about this in the past and the response I got was, You probably won't be deploying your entire infrastructure on a cheap VPS, Look at the overall cost(Engineering+Infra etc) but since we are in the "selfhosted" subreddit, That argument in my humble opinion does not holds much weight. :)

The cheapest instance in US North Central at the moment is the B1ls which has 0.5GB memory and 1 vCPU (burstable), and goes for $3.80/month (+ storage, which starts at $1.5/month for 32 GB using Standard disk storage). The B1s with 1GB memory is approximately double. Bandwidth is extra, but you could use Cloudflare to get free bandwidth out of your CDN.

But yeah, it's different tier of service compared to Digital Ocean / Vultr, with significantly more features and more guarantees in terms of performance and SLA. And it comes at a premium price. It might not be what you need, but you asked for something in Chicago and felt appropriate to at least mention it.

But, for the first year at least you can get a B1s VM for free :)

ServerCheap.net is in Chicago. Amazing support and prices are crazy.

Decibite has been great.

In Montreal I believe, but that isn’t so far away from Chicago.

AWS LightSail is a great alternative. It’s Amazon’s fixed-price service.
