Me: Canadian.

Somebody: but like what else?

Me: another Canadian?

21
krarkmetzinger•

Uh, Wisconsin.

No, I mean originally??

23
berghie91•

I do have a dutch last name.....so I guess that makes me STILL CANADIAN

Automatic_nun_gun•

I think it's because they don't want to man up and admit they drink because they hate themselves like everyone else.

McCulloch lineage, btw

RunckeyOP•

Gotta make sure he's not mistaken for a rival clan member

54
Kwetla•

He could prevent that by dressing head to toe in the McCulloch tartan.

5
Toffeeman_•

He's definitely the sort of guy to ask a random Scot if they're cousins or something.

19
Mecharonin•

What's the proper term for this?

Kiltaboo?

57
HRHPrinceOfWales•

This question was asked recently somewhere (I think it was r/scotland when an American had taken over to forcibly tell the Scottish that she was more Scottish than them because she’d visited 18 times in her youth ((they had none of it))). Anyway, it was suggested by one plucky och-aye-the-noo, that because of the Scot’s affinity for the word, Scottish wannabes should be cuntaboos, which, being a massive child, I thought was brilliant.

64
Mecharonin•

Cuntaboo suggests an obsession with cunts on the part of someone who has never experienced one. So basically a tween.

22
HRHPrinceOfWales•

That’s circa half the world’s population after age 12 though... Anyway, isn’t the -aboo prefix reserved for the lust of other people’s national culture, rather than their intimate regions? I’m disinterested° really, just passing on an amusing comment.

°Original definition.

12
Mecharonin•

I always assumed it was an obsession with an idealized thing while having no actual experience or understanding. Like the weeaboos who don't seem to realize that their favorite anime is an escapist fantasy for Japanese teens, in other words, nothing like Japanese reality.

Did... you just use a degree symbol to indicate a footnote?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck I saw those threads, they were hilarious

6
eepboop•

"Mock Jock" is quite popular if you're not gonna use cuntaboo.

7

Nah, I feel like that lumps in people who like kilts because they are comfortable and/or fun.

Annoys the fuck outta me when they quote their surname like it would be of any significance.

“Ah I’m 2 % Scottish, Clann McCulloch. I’m told we have a castle.”

seppo?

10
SpandauValet•

Rhyming slang.

Septic tank = Yank

Septic gets further abbreviated to seppo.

35
RunckeyOP•

Pretty sure it's Aussie slang only, I had to Google and was surprised I hadn't heard of it as a Kiwi

10

Septic = cockney rhyming slang version, don't go quite as far as the Aussies do but see it pop up in the fun UK sub from time to time.

11

Kiwis have the internet?????? PS can we swap Prime Ministers

8
RunckeyOP•

Classic gag mate, how long did your comment take you to upload?

P.s. nah, don't go anywhere near Jacinda, you've stolen enough from us already

Edit: actually in the spirit of Trans Tasman diplomacy, you can have our deputy PM if we're allowed to steal your Aussie slang

7
sexualised_pears7/7ths Irish•

Pretty sure it is a cockney thing originally

5
Crumpor•

It's also used in the UK, though not often these days.

Never heard yank as to mean septic tank, its been short for yankee where I live

I live in Australia btw

-2
SpandauValet•

Correct - yank is short for yankee.

The phrase "septic tank" is a rhyming slang replacement for "yank". Yank has never meant septic tank.

From wikipedia:

rhyming slang involves replacing a common word with a phrase of two or more words, the last of which rhymes with the original word; then, in almost all cases, omitting, from the end of the phrase, the secondary rhyming word.

14
Individual99991•

Yankee is used to mean anyone from the US, not just the unionist soldiers.

It is then shortened to yank.

Yank goes through Cockney rhyming slang and becomes "septic tank".

Septic tank is shortened to septic.

Septic becomes seppo.

So seppo = American.

8
FliesAreEdible•

It's a rhyme, like apples and pears is stairs, septic tank is yank.

My favourite thing is that people from the US never claim to be English or Welsh. Tbh I don’t think anyone in the US know of Wales’ existence.

I really shouldn't have to. Whether you think American culture is shit or stupid is one thing, but to say they don't have one is just retarded.

I don't think I need to explain why saying they don't have a history is retarded.

2†
bobthened•

The USA has only existed in its current form (as in populated by mainly non native-Americans) for a few hundred years. That's what I mean when I say that they have no history.
