What Is Certain

failing a conversation/ full of magicians/ named absolutism/ & relativism/ i finally say/ the only certainty/ is making something good/

as good as you are/ in the moment of its making/ it should shame/ what came before/ & make what comes after/ when you are better/ & more/ & less ignorant/ great in comparison/

but i remember ignorance/ we can't be certain/ of unknowns/ but i am certain of making/ and of chipping away/ foundations of the unknown/ so in that way i am certain/ only that i am maker/ & unmaker/

I made the line breaks according to how i read it. Don't know if you want to keep this formatting but my main point is to show you that you have a lot of really cool repetition that was kind of lost without the formatting. Hope i didn't take it too far or try to push some kind of meaning on to your work that isnt there but i really feel like this helps bring out what it was meant to convey. Hope this helps!

Edit: I forgot to say how incredibly awesome i think this poem is! Great flow and diction. Keep up the good work!

Failing at conversation,

full of magicians,

named absolutism

and relativism.

I finally say

the only certainty

is making something good.

But good as you are

in the moment of its making,

it should always

shame

what came before

and make

what comes after—

When you are better

and more

and less

ignorant—

great

in comparison.

But i remember ignorance.

We can't be certain of unknowns.

But i am certain of the making

and

of the chipping away

of foundations

of the unknown.

So,

in that way,

I am certain

only that I am

maker

and unmaker.

Well done. Bully. Applause. Here here. I thoroughly enjoy this poem. It was obvious that there was formatting issue crossing platforms, so that didn't bother me. When you wrote "I finally say" it gave me the sense of a shout,"enough is enough fools".

"When you are better & more & less ignorant" is nicely put together, though I'd rather read "and" than see ampersands, but that is just me.

All in all, great wordplay, great message. We can be certain of nothing except that in doing good, we may better ourselves and the world around us.

Ha! I like your reading of that line. I wasn't that authoritative about it though. More frustration at the sense of certainty in things that people have sometimes. I'm glad you enjoyed some of it. My current use of ampersands and shorter lines is due to an E.E. Cummings collection I just read. I've gotta get them out of my system 😄 Thanks for your comments!

Apologies for the formatting.

u/ACYeats thanks for your kind words and the suggestions. That formatting is pretty much what I had originally. The problem arose when I tried to copy and paste the poem from the note app on my phone. A mistake I won't make in the future. Thanks again!
