Want to build a VR Beast, let me know what you think.

Build Ready

Hey Everyone. My first post to this sub, but I have been lurking for a while. I would really appreciate any suggestions on this build. This will be my 3rd build. My last two have been trying to maximize my value for my budget and have been AMD chips. I am planning on switching to the Intel i9 for this one combined with the 2080ti graphics card.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I love playing VR, and my current rig was built with "minimum standards" in mind. I want to "future proof" this machine as much as possible as the next generation of VR headsets are released.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want to max everything in VR. I believe the Vive Index is spec'd at 120hz, although I have read under the right circumstances it can push 144 hz. Resolution is 1440x1600 per eye. Not sure how that translates to screen resolution in this context (probably 2880x1600).

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I am willing to spend up to $3000.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Florida, United States.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I will be keeping my current peripherals for the time being. (Keyboard, speakers, mouse, etc.) This is only for the tower. Also, I intend to upgrade to a custom water cooled system in a year or so, but I am open to an AIO.

Thanks for reading!

This is pretty much the best gaming processor and GPU money can buy rn so yeah, it'll give you the best performance in VR that you can get.

Thank you for the feedback.

You don’t need more than 16gb of RAM, unless you do video editing or something. On a similar note, are you sure you need an optical drive? Some people just put it in because it’s an option in pcpartpicker, but most people usually don’t need to use CDs anymore.

Also, what is your current power supply?

Thanks for the feedback on RAM. I want the optical drive to be able to burn Blu Ray DVDs just because. I have an optical drive on my current tower that I think I might have used once. I'm not sure why it didn't transfer over, but I'm planning on a 750w PSU, which should be more than enough for this, and a water cooling system I think?

tthrow22•

Yeah 750 should be fine, but not all 750w PSUs are made equally. Check out https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1045610-new-psu-tier-list/#comment-12402710. An A+ tier PSU would probably be what you’re looking for

This is the PSU I was planning on getting. I will check the link you provided as well. Thank you! https://pcpartpicker.com/product/V3YWGX/thermaltake-smart-pro-rgb-750w-80-bronze-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ps-spr-0750fpcbus-r

i think that mobo is not compatible with your cpu or if it is a compatible mobo you can't overclock your overclockable cpu

3
tthrow22•

Yeah @OP make sure you get a Z390 motherboard

Switched the MoBo to Z390 as suggested by u/beornog. Picked an appropriate PSU as suggested by u/tthrow22. I am going to keep the extra RAM just because.

The amount of RAM is super overkill. I have a 2080Ti/9900k with 16gb of ram and memory has never once been an issue. If you want to use all 4 slots for the visual aspect, I'd recommend dropping to 4x8GB sticks. This would save you $130 and have literally zero impact on performance. I'd actually recommend you get these as you'll see a slight improvement in gaming with the higher clock speeds.

Understood and done. I went with the 4x8 @ 3200. Thank you.

Sure thing, enjoy the build - looks like it'll be a beast
