In case somebody is not reading the article, here is an important quote:

Do quote everything:

+27 procent drugshandel en +3 procent drugsgebruik

They are not twisting numbers here. I have to say these are impressive numbers.

Depends of their definition. I am willing to bet that everyone caught with more than a "user amount" is prosecuted for dealing.

So depending on the definition of a user amount you get either users or dealers, and dealers look better in statistics.

No those are defined as drugsbezit. Don't speculate.

Article is from May 2018. Talk about dragging old cows out of the moat.

If he stops to check those numbers are gone and he virtually wins the war.

A (socialist) mayor of Antwerp once said that you could, as governement, make police statistics appear as you want. The devil is always in the details.

1
UnderstepsAntwerpen•

Exactly. Arrest everyone that carries more than 2 gram of weed for dealing and you have stellar records.

It is convictions that matter, not arrests.

*Criminaliteitscijfers

There is an important difference between reported crime and actual crime. The statistics of the Antwerp local police only refer to crime that has been discovered by the police or reported by someone filing a complaint.

SpaceCadet2000Antwerpen•

But if people are reporting less crime, isn't that objectively a good thing? Or do you have any indication that people have somehow stopped reporting certain crimes?

The crimes that are mentioned are not things that typically go unreported (burglary, robbery, car theft etc.), so I don't see why you feel the need to cast doubt on this report.

But if people are reporting less crime, isn't that objectively a good thing?

Not necessarily; it could also (hypothetically) be the result of people thinking that reporting a crime isn't going to result in anything anyways and is only a waste of time. Or for some types of crimes people might be afraid of reporting them (due to not wanting to be put in a bad light in the community, fears of retaliation, ...). Crimes being underreported can definitely be an issue.

This is especially relevant for drug crime for example (which is also mentioned in the article). It is known that there exists a certain kind of omerta in the drug world, and some people might be also hesitant to report drug crime because they fear they'll be the next one who gets a grenade thrown at them on the Antwerp streets.

chief167French Fries•

Indeed, but do we have any indication that the percentage being reported would be dramatically changing as well? Usually it is safe to assume that the report rate stays similar. Campaigns can improve it, but there is not really a lot you can do to lower the rate, unless cops suddenly refuse to take your statement

Increase in drugcases is for the most part in selling drugs

Got a source for that?

Lol. Accept the minnelijke schikking, pay the fine and it's done.

Drug user cases don't even reach court, as court is already overloaded.

Once again: police statistics only indicate police activity, a rise or decline means something just got more or less important for the police force.

Shame on you, OP.

1
wirekeOPAntwerpen•

Euh?

1
SpaceCadet2000Antwerpen•

They present the numbers each year around this time. OP just accidentally posted a link from last year, presumably because he was looking for a non-paywalled article.

This is a link (unfortunately paywalled) to the article that was published about it yesterday: https://www.gva.be/cnt/dmf20190516_04405360/criminaliteit-in-antwerpen-daalt-met-30-procent-tegenover-2012-dit-is-een-gelukkig-moment

SP-A had nothing to do with this improvement.

These are the numbers of the De Wever administration from 2013 to 2017. SP-A was not part of that coalition. In fact, the numbers are a comparison with the situation under SP-A rule during the Patrick Janssens administration.
