Star Alliance using Stellar for cross airlines reward programs?

This might be an involuntary leak from a consulting company, very interesting though. It seems that blockchain is setting a foothold into reward programs.

The specific mention and explanation at around minute 13: https://youtu.be/lPxlKk9fqpw

'And then Star Alliance are also looking to integrate the new IBM/Stellar platform, that is purely designed for international settlements. So they'll be integrating that.

So not only do the points settle in real time, but the financial transaction between the two airlines settles as well. It’s really revolutionary stuff… Word on the street is that Oneworld is looking at something similar.’

Better link for Star Alliance:

As someone who flies a lot, I find this quite exciting! Although TBH I've never had problems with cross-airline transactions gone missing as he mentions in the video.

Ah, thanks!

Yeah I know what you mean - although my Avios pionts (BA) can be almost impossible to spend. Interoperability/rewards has lots of potential!

12:45 is a good starting point for the video.

What I think is significant here is that it sounds like Emirates had a very good time setting this up on stellar, and airlines are a tiny part of the business they push around.

All in all sounds a very positive adoption that can spur additional solutions using Stellar from an important actor in the scene!

I think this is the number one use case for DLT tech - trustless number crunching. Hope we see an official announcement from IBM/Stellar soon re the program.

Yeah. Reward programs are a pretty good fit with blockchain.

  • They are typically not private information.
  • You want to keep rewards status on ledger.
  • You want to share the ledger with many interested and involved parties.
  • At some point you want to redeem reward status into monetisation.

A normal database can do all of this just fine.

EDIT: Yes, really.

I’m sure that is what their old system used, right? So did you not hear how the guy said it was “clunky”? 13:45

Or maybe you’ve never booked a “partner award” with airline miles. It’s a pain sometimes. Likely due to the current systems between partners being clunky.

It’s basically as if a million microservices all cried out at once and were suddenly silenced by a legacy backend SAP process.

Consider managed database, or just a regular database is fine.

Does Blockchain actually provide a solution to the "clunkiness" or was it just a bad data solution to begin with?

If they need to settle payments separately with WW then fair enough. But the actual rewards system doesn't need blockchain.
